ART U Sweeps Dominican As Win Streak Grows To Four

DALY CITY, Calif. -- Academy of Art women's tennis continued its dominant run Saturday, putting away Dominican 7-0 with straight sets victories in five of six singles matchups. After freshmen Maria Vittoria Casucci and Paulina Alvarez prevailed in a tie-breaker to help secure the doubles point, the Urban Knights completed their third sweep in their last four matches with strong singles play.

Doubles action started with sophomore Viktoria Leth and freshman Julia Ortega collecting a 6-4 win over Julia Rydel and Zoe Coggins in the second position. Both the first and third courts were simultaneously coming down to the wire, but it was Casucci and Alvarez who outlasted Gig Alajeely and Haley Garcia 7-4 in their tie-breaker for a 7-6 triumph and the doubles point.

Thereafter, Ortega yielded just three games to Rydel for a 6-1, 6-2 result in the fourth spot while Casucci, Leth, and Yun "Nicole" Shiau all needed no more than 17 games to best their opponents. On the second court, Shiau topped Gina Dudley 6-1, 6-4 while Casucci defeated Garcia 6-2, 6-3 on three and Leth prevailed over Alajeely 6-3, 6-2 at five. Sophomore Sofia Ragona went the distance with Audrey Rafols in the opening set, coming away with a 7-6 win by way of a 9-7 tie-breaker then finished things off 6-3 in the second. Alvarez needed a third frame to best Coggins, but did so 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 10-5 in the end.

The victory elevates the Knights to 5-2 on the year while the Penguins drop to 4-4.

Remaining at home, ART U will next host Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, Mar. 10 at noon.
