SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a rematch from the team's regular season finale on
Apr. 16, #6 seed Academy of Art women's tennis and #5 seed No. 48 Fresno Pacific met once more to determine third place at the Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday. Though the Sunbirds carried an advantage through the early part of singles play, the Urban Knights were well on their way to a comeback with the final three pairings going deep into their respective third sets. In the end, FPU managed to eke out a 4-1 score that could have looked rather different with just a little more time out at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
Though the sophomore doubles tandem of No. 41
Sofia Ragona and
Yun "Nicole" Shiau were going back and forth with Lea Falentin and Maria Borodii in the top position, the Sunbirds secured the doubles point with 6-2 and 6-3 wins on the other two courts.
The Fresno Pacific lead became 3-0 when Falentin won in the second singles spot and Borodii rallied late past Ragona 5-7, 6-0, 6-1. From there, however, the match was an absolute fight. Freshman
Julia Ortega worked to a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Alice Marques on court four to make it 3-1 ahead of a trio of three-set matchups. In the moment where sophomore
Viktoria Leth nearly had a win up 6-5 on Sanne Brull in the third and freshman
Paulina Alvarez was in a 6-6 tiebreaker with Elise Leik, FPU's Alice Di Matteo concluded the contest by defeating Shiau 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Academy of Art completes the PacWest Championship Tournament in fourth place overall and sees its overall record move to 10-7 while FPU is now 15-10 on the season.
