CARSON, Calif. – The start to the 2022 campaign didn't go quite as planned for Academy of Art men's soccer, as Cal State Dominguez Hills scored a pair of early goals before holding strong defensively as the Toros claimed the 2-0 victory in non-conference action.
Action started quickly to kick off the season, with Urban Knights (0-1) senior goalkeeper
Davis King making a save on the first shot that he saw, but a goal by the Toros (1-0) in the seventh minute after a cross-box goal for Sulaiman Bah. ART U threatened with a chance minutes later when junior midfielder
Gilly Miller was taken down a few yards outside the 18' box, but the ensuing free kick was handled by the CSUDH keeper.
Just about 15 minutes and five shots later, CSUDH doubled its lead when Bah struck yet again, this time capitalizing on an interception leading to a trio of passes where Bah was the final recipient, pulling the ball back to the middle and scoring. Miller would fire one more attempt for the Knights, but it would not find the target.
Academy of Art turned up the offensive pressure in the second half leading to a total of four shots, all of which came from different Urban Knights, but only two made it on to target and were corralled by the Toros keeper.
All told, ART U put exactly half of their looks on target (3-for-6), but it was CSUDH that held the edge in both shots (13) and shots on goal (six). Miller's two shots with one on goal would top the Knights, while King ended his night with a total of four saves on the 13 shots faced.
ART U returns to the pitch in just two days when the Knights will battle Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, Aug. 27 beginning at 1 p.m.
