Sunbirds Too Strong, Hand Knights Non-Conference Defeat

FRESNO, Calif. – Goals for Fresno Pacific early and often set the pace in a non-conference battle against Academy of Art women's soccer on Saturday, as ART U struggled to keep up with the FPU during a 6-0 decision in favor of the Sunbirds at Ramirez Field.

Scoring started in the sixth minute for the Sunbirds (3-2-2) within an unassisted goal from Mackenzie Madron, and continued in the 15th minute with FPU top scorer Tori De Leon netting first first of the match, also in unassisted fashion. De Leon finished her brace when she struck again just moments later in the 17th minute, with Nadia Flores being credited on the helper for a 3-0 lead. Just before halftime in the 41st minute, Fresno Pacific found a fourth goal, as Flores earned her second assist of the match (along with an assist for Diana Garcia) when Madilyn Hernandez joined the scoring to push the FPU lead to 4-0.

Though junior defender Raquel Calvo Mendez put the only Urban Knights' (0-6-0) shot on goal during the second half, the attempt was not enough to stay on pace with the persistent attack of the Sunbirds. Two of the home team's shot attempts would find their way into the net, both from the boot of Alena Schenk, as FPU would heading on to win 6-0.

Making five or more saves for the sixth time this year in as many matches was ART U freshman goalkeeper Alicia Calderon, as she stopped a total of six chances to give her a total of 46 saves on the young season.

Academy of Art will look to rebound when they return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 21 as the Hawks roll into town for the penultimate non-conference tune up of the 2022 campaign.
