BELMONT, Calif. – Working their way back from a double-digit first half deficit, the Urban Knights found themselves tied with Hawaii Pacific 60-60 when sophomore guard
Jadence Clifton dramatically connected on a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation. Academy of Art women's basketball could not overcome an overtime push by the Sharks in the 72-65 Pacific West Conference rematch Tuesday, but still had two remarkable performances with Clifton scoring a season-high 29 points and sophomore forward/center
Alisha Wilson tying her career-high with 22 rebounds plus 19 points for her 10th consecutive double-double.
After two minutes of scoreless action began the contest, momentum shifted back and forth until a long-range attack helped HPU rattle off eight unanswered during a 13-2 run. Though the difference would reach double figures briefly, baskets by senior guard
Lauryn Manns and freshman guard
Madison Johnson kept it at 20-13 heading to the second quarter.
Wilson and Clifton accounted for all 11 ART U points in the second frame, but four from the visitors over the final two and a half minutes elevated them to a 34-24 halftime advantage. The second half began with Wilson, freshman guard
Kyla Wandick, and Johnson keying a 7-0 run which immediately had the Urban Knights back within striking distance. After again trading scores, the teams ended the third quarter separated by just two points, 43-41, with Clifton getting into the paint for consecutive buckets.

HPU seemed to continue to have an answer each time Academy of Art was about to close the gap, but facing their largest deficit of the frame at six points with three minutes left, the Knights got four crucial points from Wilson before she fouled out and results at the free throw line became extremely important. ART U was finally afforded its opportunity when a split trip to the line had them down three, 60-57 with 21 seconds on the clock. Clifton's number was called as she was handed the basketball at the top of the three-point arc, made a move stepping back to her left, and drained the triple before stealing the Sharks last possession to force overtime.
Midway through the extra period, the game was still up for grabs with the Sharks ahead just 64-62, but missed shots and turnovers enabled their 6-0 run and allowed HPU to secure the 72-65 victory when the dust settled.
The evening's result put Academy of Art at 4-14 overall and 4-9 in PacWest play despite Clifton going 10-for-20 from the field, 8-for-11 from the free throw line, and her lone 3-pointer serving as the game-tying bucket all toward the highest point total by an Urban Knight this season at 29 points. She added another season-best with nine rebounds as well as three assists and two steals. Wilson's 19 points came on an 8-for-15 shooting performance from the field and her 22 rebounds (one shy of the ART U record) matched her career-high set earlier this season versus Holy Names (
Dec. 30). Tuesday would feature her 12th double-double of the season and 26th of her career to pull her within one of the program's career record-holder Jessica Nolan.
Hawaii Pacific moved to 9-8 on the year and 7-3 in conference action as the leading scorer in NCAA Division II Abby Spurgin ended up right around her season average with 23 points while Kaylee Berry added a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Knights' current four-game homestand wraps up this Sunday, Jan. 29 with a 1 p.m. tipoff hosting UH Hilo in Belmont.
