Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

ART U Never Trails En Route To 65-40 Victory Over Hawks

BELMONT, Calif. – After starting the game with a 14-4 run, Academy of Art women's basketball proceeded to hold Holy Names to single digits offensively in multiple quarters before triumphing 65-40 in the Pacific West Conference rematch on Sunday inside Walter Gleason Gym. Junior guard Ashana Hinds knocked down four 3-pointers as part of her season-high 23 points while sophomore forward/center Alisha Wilson tied the program record with a career-best 23 rebounds as part of her 16th double-double of the season.

Coming nearly two minutes after tip-off, the game's first basket was a triple from sophomore guard Jadence Clifton which soon sparked the 14-4 start as ART U scored on five consecutive possessions with Wilson, Clifton, and Hinds all getting in on the act. The Hawks closed the gap to four thereafter, but that would be as close as they would come with the Urban Knights closing the quarter on a 10-2 run fueled by multiple buckets from sophomore guard Kyla Wandick and sophomore forward/center Christy Ojide.

The teams traded scores for the first three minutes of the second quarter, but HNU was again denied points for the remainder of the frame while Hinds nailed a pair of 3-pointers during an 8-0 surge in the final minute and a half for the 40-18 advantage.

Ashana HindsWilson scored the first six points of the second half for ART U as the margin swelled to 25 points before a four-minute stretch of scoreless basketball ensued. Like she did in the two prior quarters, Hinds did more damage in the third's final minute, connecting from long range for the 52-26 lead heading to the fourth where it grew to as many as 28 points.

When all was said and done, Academy of Art had allowed just 40 points in the 65-40 win, marking the second-lowest total this season behind the 35 surrendered to Biola on Feb. 4 and the sixth-fewest in program history.

With two wins in its last three games, ART U rises to 7-16 overall and 7-11 in PacWest play. Hinds' game-high 23 points came on a 9-for-13 shooting performance from the floor and featured four triples while Wilson's 14-point, 23-rebound double-double made her just the third Urban Knight to achieve that rebound total, joining her with Alisa Griggs (Jan. 30, 2012) and Pre'Franz Dominick (Jan. 15, 2018). Wilson was 7-for-12 from the field, grabbed 12 offensive rebounds alone, and added six steals plus two assists. Off the bench, Ojide dominated to the tune of 10 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks while Clifton provided nine points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Madison Johnson's 10 rebounds and three assists were both season highs.

Holy Names drops to 2-24 on the season and 1-18 in conference action despite the tandem of Jazmine Soto and Dylan Benitez combining for 26 points, seven steals, and six assists.

The final home contest for Academy of Art is up next on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. as the Urban Knights are set to recognize senior guard Lauryn Manns and Joy Krupa in a pre-game Senior Night ceremony.
