Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Opening Quarter Puts Dominican Past ART U In Finale

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – After establishing a double-digit advantage in the early stages of Saturday's Pacific West Conference rematch and the final game of the season for Academy of Art women's basketball, Dominican came away with the 82-57 victory inside Conlan Center despite a season-high 18 points from freshman guard Kyla Wandick that led three Urban Knights scoring in double figures.

A 10-0 run to start the contest was stopped by a 3-pointer from junior guard Ashana Hinds, but the Penguins soon returned to a double-digit margin with 11 more unanswered. The first quarter's final minute was highlighted by senior guard Lauryn Manns hitting a triple to cut the deficit to 26-10.

Manns again connected from long range to begin the second frame then another Hinds 3-pointer midway through brought ART U to within 12 points, but Academy of Art could not close the gap any further as successive layups by Wandick were rebutted by DU's own success from deep.

A 43-28 difference at halftime grew to as many as 22 in the third and beyond in the fourth as Dominican kept its foot on the gas for the eventual 82-57 victory.

ART U ends its season at 7-18 overall and 7-13 in PacWest play. The 18 points from Wandick surpass her previous season high of 17 back on Dec. 3 versus Concordia while Manns ended just a point from her own season-high with 16 points. Hinds was the third Urban Knight to score in double figures with 12 points and sophomore forward/center Alisha Wilson finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Dominican, 18-10 overall and 15-5 in PacWest play, had a team-high 15 points from Brittney Cedeno come with nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals while a pair of others, Alaiyah San Juan and Jenna Duley, chipped in 12 points apiece.

This concludes the 2022-23 campaign for Academy of Art women's basketball. For the latest news and information, and the upcoming season in review, check out www.ARTUAthletics.com.
