Hilo Advances Past ART U In PacWest Consolation Bracket

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a rematch from a meeting earlier this season where ART U came away victorious, No. 6 seed Academy of Art women's tennis was looking to repeat the formula against No. 10 seed UH Hilo in their Pacific West Conference Championship Consolation Semifinal battle on Friday, but Hilo was able to enact its revenge and advance to the consolation final thanks to a 4-2 victory.

Heroically battling short-handed and unable to fill the third doubles and sixth singles positions, the Urban Knights (8-8) began the day in an 0-1 hole before doubles action had began. It also meant that the Vulcans (9-10) needed to win just one of the doubles matchups, which they did on court one where the tandem of Julia Barden and Nanami Okamoto was able to top the ART U sophomore pair of Erica Hellbe and Paulina Alvarez. Though their matchup remained unfinished, Academy of Art junior Yun "Nicole" Shiau and sophomore Maria Vittoria Casucci were leading their battle against Akari Ichikawa and Hikari Osaki, 5-4.

With the Vulcans just two points away from clinching the match, the Urban Knights did their best to fight back and that began on court one where Casucci produced a straight-set win over Ichikawa, 6-2, 6-0. ART U then brought the match level at 2-2 after Alvarez picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win on court five over Okamoto. Many of the other matchups were battles with some moving into a third set, such as court four where Osaki was able to prevail after Shiau had won the opening set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, the match-clinching point came on court three as McKenna Mountain also bounced back from dropping the opening set against Hellbe to seal a 6-7 (7-3), 6-2, 6-3. The only match the remained unfinished was the second court where ART U sophomore Julia Ortega was closing in on a victory over Barden, 7-6 (7-5), 4-1.

One match remains for the Urban Knights in the PacWest Championship, as ART U will take on MSU Denver in the seventh place match on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
