Men's Soccer Strikes First, Drops 3-2 Result To Vulcans

SAN FRANCISCO – Junior defender Chris Stokes scored his first goal in an Urban Knight uniform early in the match, but Academy of Art men's soccer dropped a 3-2 decision to UH Hilo on Monday morning at Paul Goode Field.

Stokes' goal came in the sixth minute off a header following a corner kick dished into the box by redshirt sophomore midfielder Elvis Mensah, marking his second assist of the year. Mensah is now currently tied for first on ART U with teammate and junior defender Abraham Valencia in assists (2).

In the 24th minute of the match, the Vulcans would tie up the score as Aidan Santos was given the ball at the top of the box and knocked it in towards the left post. Gabriel Gallardo helped UH Hilo take the lead before halftime with a shot towards the far post from the opposite corner of the box and finding it go top corner.

Just after halftime in the 51st minute, junior forward Alejandro Palos netted a goal for the second consecutive match with a tap-in goal that was set up by senior midfielder Gilly Miller. Palos is now second on ART U in total goals on the year (2).

Another 25 minutes of scoreless play ensued in the second half until Pally Ingvason took the lead for the Vulcans. This ball found its way to the back of the net, being kicked from the top of the box and rolling in through the bottom right corner.

The Knights had one final chance to even up the scoring in the last minute with a shot from freshman midfielder Joey Glaab, but it would inevitably be saved by the Vulcans' goalkeeper as the time ran out. UH Hilo improves to 4-2-0 and 1-0 PacWest with their victory.

As a team, ART U would end the match with 13 shots, their second most of the season. Miller, Mensah, and Palos finished the match all with three each. Freshman goalkeeper Ronaldo Gutierrez made his collegiate debut in the match, allowing no goals in his eight minutes played.

Academy of Art, now 0-6-3 and 0-1-0 PacWest, looks ahead to their second Pacific West Conference matchup against Chaminade on Thursday, Sept. 28 at Paul Goode Field with a kickoff set for 10 a.m.
