SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Academy of Art men's basketball went wire-to-wire with Dominican during their first Pacific West Conference meeting of the year on Saturday, and ART U saved its best stretch for last with a 16-11 second overtime featuring all-star performances from multiple Urban Knights, ending it all with a 87-82 final score in their victory.
"What a gritty performance tonight in our overtime win," said Head Coach
Scott Waterman. "I give our team a lot of credit that we battled back from a 14-point deficit. Everyone contributed and the sign of a good team is being able to win on the road when you don't play your best. Still a lot to work on, but I am excited about the direction we are going after getting this win tonight."
Following a first half that had the Knights outscored 34-26, the team worked out their kinks at the break and stormed back with a 39-31 second frame while the squad traded the lead with the Penguins five times towards the backside of the second half. The score at the end of regulation would result at 65-65 as Dale Currie of Dominican knocked down the game-tying free throw.
The first overtime period saw little offense from both sides, with just six points apiece from the Knights and Penguins after a five-minute defensive battle. In double overtime, however, ART U would outscore DUC by five with all 16 points coming from junior forward Jamal Fuller and junior forward Isaiah Williams to steal the win 87-82 all after an early first-half deficit.Â
Fuller would explode in the second half of regulation with, at one point, scoring nine on four straight possessions to his team-high point total (29). Fuller ended up with a 66 percent shooting percentage from the field (10-for-15) in the contest, as he went perfect from range as well as the charity stripe (8-for-8). Isaiah Williams followed behind with the second-highest point total on the squad (21) as he saw nearly 54 percent (7-for-15) of his shots find the net. Senior forward Latrell Williams had a career performance with his season-high in rebounds (18), which ranks tied for fifth all-time in ART U single-game history. As Latrell Williams recorded this feat, he set the career rebounds record for the program, now having the most all-time in an Urban Knight uniform with 627 to date.Â
During these performances, redshirt sophomore guard Eli Taylor recorded the fifth most assists in a game in program history (9) and collected three steals while junior guard Jamal Winston knocked down his season-high in points (8), the third-highest total on the team in the game.
The Penguins were led by a core four in the contest including Currie with the team-high in points (23). Marcus McCutchen tacked on 18 points of his own, while Brendon Johnson and Garrett Siebels added 15 points apiece. Siebels also led the squad in rebounds (9) while Currie did in assists (5).
The Knights will return home for one contest against Concordia after their five-game road trip, tipping off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25 for the team's Coaches vs. Cancer game inside Kezar Pavilion.
