Women's Hoops Fights Back In Third Quarter, CUI Holds On

SAN FRANCISCO – In the Pacific West Conference rematch pitting Academy of Art women's basketball against Concordia inside Kezar Pavilion on Thursday, the Urban Knights worked their way back from a 15-point halftime deficit, using two separate 7-0 runs in the third quarter to make it a one-possession game before the Golden Eagles closed strong, prevailing 81-60.

As the teams traded baskets early and four different Knights accounted for the first five conversions, it was not until the final two minutes of the opening quarter that CUI gained an initial margin on consecutive 3-pointers. That 20-13 margin grew to double figures in the third quarter, but was promptly reduced by a triple by sophomore guard Alba Rovira Ayuso and a jumper by freshman guard Anna Fornells. The final three minutes of the half belonged to Concordia with no missed shots in six attempts composing a 13-4 push that resulted in the visitors up 46-31 at the break.

Freshman guard Lucia Revenga and Fornells took turns scoring during a 9-1 burst to open the second half while cutting the difference to single digits. That duo again worked in tandem, propelling a 7-0 run that brought ART U to within three points at 52-49 as two minutes still remained in the frame. The first points in freshman guard Lola Martin's collegiate career and a layup by junior forward/center Christy Ojide then had the difference at four with 30 seconds left.

Despite Rovira Ayuso's five points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, 18 of the last 20 points scored in the game were on the Golden Eagles' end as their more than 66 percent shooting from the field brought them an 81-60 win in the end.

"Really pleased with our growth this week especially during the quality performance in the third quarter," said Head Coach Jesse Clark. "While the result was not good enough tonight, we will continue our growth edge. Credit to Concordia and their execution in the fourth quarter."

ART U finishes January at 4-13 overall and 3-8 in PacWest play with three Knights scoring in double figures in the contest led by an impressive all-around line from Revenga who matched her season bests in all but the steals category with 16 points, eight rebounds, six steals, and five assists. Rovira Ayuso added 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field while Fornells' 13 points marked a season high and came with four rebounds plus three assists. Ojide added eight points, six rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Concordia now sits at 9-8 on the season and 7-4 in conference action as Izzy Navarro finished as the game's scoring leader. She put in 22 points including 11 in 14 trips to the free throw line and Teagan Thurman logged a double-double (10 points, 15 rebounds) in 19 minutes off the bench.

Academy of Art will be back on the road to begin the month of February as a return to Southern California will feature pairings with Azusa Pacific (Feb. 1) and Point Loma (Feb. 3).
