Knights Battle In Final Tuneup But Broncos Take The Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Exhibition play has come to an end for Academy of Art women's tennis after their recent outing at the Degheri Tennis Center against more NCAA Division I talent. ART U saw numerous sets that could have gone either way, but Santa Clara ended up having the edge on each occasion in a 7-0 victory on Friday afternoon.

Doubles play between the Urban Knights and the Broncos saw the three matches be split up between the teams, as SCU took two and ART U finished off doubles for the day with match victory for sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean (7-5) over the Broncos' Finley Kalinic and Varya Zlotnik. Senior Viktoria Leth and junior Paulina Alvarez battled hard in a back-and-forth pairing with SCU's Gabriela Tevez and Kacey Feng, but couldn't find the lead as Santa Clara took the match 6-3.

Despite creating a tiebreaker in her first set of singles play on Court 2, Plazas fought close with Kalinic as the pair traded winning points throughout the contest, but Kalinic would ultimately take the match 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Junior Erica Hellbe saw a similar storyline in her No. 5 singles match, as this time the second set tiebreaker would be the difference for Zlotnik 6-2, 7-6 (10-8). Najean was in close proximity to her opponent Velizara Fileva 6-3, 6-4 in the third position, as was freshman Amelija Supulniece against JennaMarie Gordon 6-2, 6-4 on Court 1.

Academy of Art will compete in their first official contest of the season next Thursday  as ART U will host Portland State on Feb. 1 at the Bay Club South San Francisco with the first serve coming at noon.
