SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art men's soccer took on Biola in their first home Pacific West Conference match of their 2024 campaign, and despite a score from sophomore forward Farbizio Garrido, the Urban Knights could not complete the comeback as they dropped the match 3-1.
In the first half, Biola came out strong, striking 12 shots in the first half with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Florian Grollmann recording three saves for the Knights in that timeframe. One did get through to the back of the net, as Ryan Ellsworth put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 25th minute off a Justin Eisenmann assist through the middle of the Knights' defense. Senior defender
Chris Stokes took the first two shots for ART U in the match, but both headers weren't able to find the net.
Academy of Art saw its deficit turn to two shortly into the second half, as Tomislav Jozinovic increased the Eagles' lead in the 51st minute, while Cruz Navarro made it three scores in the 57th. Shots would come from six different members of ART U in the closing frame as they got off eight combined, and it was Garrido who got one to go as he scored his first ART U goal. Garrido's conversion came from an offensive play created by himself gliding across the box, and recollected the ball off an Eagles defender's clearance where he stuck towards the left post and saw it get past the goalkeeper.
A total of 10 shots came from ART U in the match, which is the third time they've done so this season. Keeping the Biola's goalkeeper on his toes, Gijs van Shouten collected two saves in the process, while Grollmann finished with five.
Academy of Art drops to an overall record of 1-6-2 while being 0-3-1 in conference. Meanwhile the Eagles improve to 4-5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference. The Urban Knights will head back out to compete on the road against Dominican on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 12:30 p.m. before returning home for a three-match homestand.
