Women’s Basketball Outlasts Chaminade 67-66 In Overtime

SAN FRANCISCO – In a Pacific West Conference battle that oscillated back and forth over the course of four quarters, it was Academy of Art women's basketball who celebrated victory by a single point, 67-66, thanks to clutch free throws by redshirt freshman guard Karereatua Williams in the final second of overtime inside Kezar Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

After briefly holding a five-point lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Maddie Morrow, the Urban Knights saw the Silverswords rally back with seven straight to end the opening quarter up 15-12. The visitors' run extended to 13-2 in the second until senior forward/center Christy Ojide Boiko nailed a triple of her own. Though sophomore guards Anna Fornells and Lucia Revenga provided points in the last three minutes, CUH headed into the halftime locker room in front 35-21.

Out of the break, senior forward Yasmine Sifaoui converted a three-point play then Williams later caught fire from long range, knocking down three 3-pointers over one and a half minutes to cut the deficit by more than half. A 47-41 Chaminade advantage at the end of three quarters was steadily whittled down in the fourth as Williams, freshman forward Keira Mitchell, Fornells, Revenga, and Sifaoui all scored to fuel a 10-0 surge for the 56-54 lead.

Having once trailed by as many as 16, ART U came all the way back, but soon trailed by two with under a minute left in regulation. Williams' number was called with just over 30 seconds on the clock as she pulled up for a jumper just inside the free throw line to tie the game at 58-58, eventually forcing overtime.

Karereatua Williams"We discussed both at the half and during the second half the number one thing we needed to control was our own effort," said Head Coach Jesse Clark. "Huge credit to our entire group as we took a deep collective breath and went to work on this. There were massive 50/50 wins by multiple people in the third quarter that provided important sources of energy to help us complete the comeback."

A layup by Ojide Boiko started the extra five minutes on a positive note though CUH again held a one-point advantage approaching the final minute. Revenga proceeded to convert a huge three-point play then it was up to Williams once again after she drew a foul with one second left and calmly put in free throws for the 67-66 triumph.

"We had worked too hard to get ourselves out of the hole we were in during the first half," Williams said. "We have had three losses and there was no way we were losing this game. I wanted to go into the holiday break with a win to come back into our season knowing what we are capable of. We kept possession of the ball and executed when it was most important. Massive team effort today and ready to get more wins coming back from the break."

The fifth PacWest team to seven wins overall this season, ART U improves to 7-4 as well as 1-3 in conference action. Williams' 15 points off the bench were supported by her fourth game of the year with three 3-pointers made while Revenga provided a season-best 13 points plus a career-high nine rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Sifaoui provided 11 points, Ojide Boiko combined 10 points with six rebounds, and three assists, and Mitchell logged a season-high three blocks along with tying her season-high of nine rebounds.

"Tonight was a display of how we can spread around the scoring because of our talent," Clark said. "We are at our best when we share the ball and give each other great shot attempts."

Chaminade drops to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in PacWest matchups despite Kali Jones' 10-point, 16-rebound double-double and three other Silverswords scoring in double figures.

Academy of Art will resume conference play in the 2025 calendar year with a trip to Southern California featuring Biola (Jan. 2) and Point Loma (Jan. 4) to start January.

"We will focus on family and the spirit of the holidays, yet with intentional thoughts on the continued growth of our offensive decisions and consistent defensive execution," Clark said.
