All-Around Success Produces 7-0 Sweep For Women’s Tennis

DALY CITY, Calif. – As Academy of Art women's tennis faced off against Westmont in their first home match since winning five straight contests, the squad took care of business against the Warriors, prevailing with a 7-0 sweep with the Urban Knights winning all six singles matches, as well as taking all three in doubles.

The afternoon began with dominant play at all three doubles sets, with junior Paulina Alvarez and junior Maria Vittoria Casucci kicking off the action with a 6-3 victory over Justie Spitzer and Liska Knight on Court 3. The No. 45 in the nation doubles team freshman Amelija Supulniece and junior Erica Hellbe followed behind clinching the doubles point for ART U on Court 1 with another 6-3 win, while sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean finished off doubles play with the third 6-3 triumph of the day for the Knights on Court 2. 

Alvarez quickly earned the second point of the match to start singles action, as she took down Knight 6-1, 6-0 on Court 5 smoothly as she dominated both sets. Plazas then continued to show the Warriors the Knights contained full control with a 6-0, 6-0 win on Court 2 against Olivia Madarang. Supulniece swiftly finished her match soon after, as she took down Francesca Aguirre 6-2, 6-1 on Court 1 to clinch the victory for the Knights as it stood 4-0 at the time.

Estelle NajeanWith the win for the day in hand, ART U saw the next three matches play out with three more straight victories, as senior Viktoria Leth beat Sabina Salva on Court 4 with a 6-2, 6-1 score, freshman Georgiana Parr cruised passed Arianne Vethan 6-3, 6-2 on Court 6, and Najean finished the afternoon off with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Sophia Ostovany on Court 3.

Improving to 6-3 on the year, Academy of Art next returns to the court in Fresno, Calif. where they'll compete against Cal State LA on Mar. 22 and follow it up against Point Loma on Mar. 23, both at the Haak Tennis Complex.
