Urban Knights Drop Matchup With Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO – In the first match of the two-match stint in Texas, Academy of Art men's soccer took on St. Mary's (Tex.) where they would not allow any scores through the first half of action, but eventually fell 3-0 on Thursday at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The Urban Knights and Rattlers split the first four shots of the match, as junior forward Adrian Lechuga and senior defender Elijah Cofer each struck one at the net within the first 16 minutes of play. StMU would shoot on five more occasions within the opening frame, but the Knights held on strong to disallow any scores through the first 45 minutes.

Lechuga fired at the net first in the second half to open up the closing half of action, but watched as it would fall off target. Calum Murdoch of the Rattlers responded soon after, as he managed to get a header to go after seeing it take a deflection off a redshirt freshman goalkeeper Florian Grollmann two-hand punch out. Murdoch did not have much time to react, but was in the right place at the right time to redirect the ball towards the Knights' net.

Two more scores would come from StMU within a minute of one another around the 71st minute, as Gael Gallegos of the Rattlers scored both. To put the squad up two, Jamie Thompson sent in a low cross from the side of the box right at Gallegos, who struck a half-volley towards the top-center of the net. Adding further insurance, Gallegos stole the ball away from the Knights seconds after the following kickoff and bent it around a diving keeper for the finish.

StMU knew how to make their shots on goal pure quality, as three of five would find the net while Grollmann recorded saves on the other two.

After the loss, ART U falls to 0-2-1 overall while the Rattlers improve to 2-1-2. Academy of Art net travels to Austin as they'll take on St. Edward's this Saturday, Sept. 21 with a kickoff at noon CT (10 a.m. PT).
