Knights Find Singles Momentum But Vulcans Steal 4-3 Win

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Taking on UH Hilo in the center of their three-match Hawaiian road trip, Academy of Art women's tennis found some momentum in singles to try and take the victory, but would come within just a point as the result fell in the Vulcans' favor at 4-3.

Coming down to the wire in doubles, the Urban Knights fought hard to come from behind needing to take wins on the top two courts, but ART U's sophomore Amelija Supulniece and sophomore Estelle Najean would claim the only duos triumph after taking down Marie Cordonnier and Mila Srebro 6-2 on Court 1. Court 2's intense battle including sophomore Georgiana Parr and freshman Stefani Georgieva was anyone's match after being tied up, but the Vulcans' pair of Akari Ichikawa and McKenna Mountain would win the tiebreaker to finish the joust 7-6 (7-5).

In singles, Supulniece and Najean swiftly took down their opponents on Courts 1 and 2 to put the score within reach at 3-2 in UHH's favor. While Supulniece won hers 6-2, 6-3, Najean's result came out to 6-1, 6-3. With all eyes on Courts 3 and 4 and needing both to pull off the come from behind win, the Knights would secure just one to see a close 4-3 finish as the final result. Parr's 7-5, 6-3 score against Cordonnier on Court 4 is what secured the third point for the squad, but a 2-6, 2-6 loss on Court 3 would be enough for the Vulcans to take the victory.

A rematch with Chaminade is next up for the squad, as ART U will take on the Silverswords tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 28, with a noon PT (9 a.m. HT) first serve commencing in Honolulu.
