Bovee, Lacy Toss Complete Games, Split DH

SAN FRANCISCO – It was a tale of two games with very different results at Benedetti Diamond on Thursday. The one constant was dominant Urban Knight pitching featuring two complete games from a pair of right-handers, senior Brett Bovee and junior Luke Lacy.

GAME ONE:

California Baptist's Garett King stole the show in game one, no-hitting the Urban Knights while only allowing two runners to reach base by way of a hit batsman and an error. It was the first no-hitter that the Urban Knights have suffered while competing in Division II.

While receiving the tough-luck loss, Bovee was impressive in his own right. The Las Vegas native threw his first complete-game this season and fourth in an ART U uniform. In his 9.0 innings pitched, Bovee allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, six walks, and two strikeouts. The righty currently owns a 1.95 earned run average, the lowest of any starting pitcher on the team and the sixth-best in the PacWest. Furthermore, Bovee's 50.2 innings pitched in 2017 lead the conference.

GAME TWO:

Lacy avenged Academy of Art's loss in the opener with a shut-down performance in game two. The righty dealt his team-leading third complete-game of the season which ties Bovee and senior left-hander Alexander Kuisel for the fifth-best, single-season mark in program history. Lacy only surrendered three hits in the shutout while striking out five and walking two.

The Valencia, Calif. native's three runs of support all came in the bottom of the second inning. ART U's junior outfield trio got the scoring started in the frame. A six-pitch walk to Izac Bauer was followed by a double to right field from Evan Ray which put batters on second and third with no outs. Murphy broke the tie with his second triple of the year which ricocheted off of the left field wall and drove in both of the runners. Now with Murphy on third, junior catcher Tyler Harry swung at a first-pitch fastball that was lined over the shortstop for an RBI single that gave the Urban Knights a 3-0 lead.

ART U threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings, getting runners into scoring position, but the insurance runs they were looking for were not needed; Lacy continued to deal and did not allow a hit for 4.2 innings stretching between the first and sixth frames.

Academy of Art now moves to 12-15 overall and 8-6 in the PacWest after today's results and will look to take the series with two games remaining. The schedule currently calls for Noon first pitches on Saturday and Sunday. However, an incoming storm may force Friday's matchup to be postponed to a Saturday doubleheader. Stay tuned for updates.
