OAKLAND, Calif. -- Senior catcher
Zak May blasted his fourth homer of the season for his 25
th run batted in and is now just three RBI away from breaking the single season record, but Azusa Pacific prevailed with a couple of long shots of their own.
May now has 11 games to drive in three runs to surpass the 27 RBI season by Zach Babitt in 2011. His team leading fourth home run of the season moves him into third on the single season home runs list and puts him just two back of tying the record.
Senior pitcher
Ben Kaser made tossed 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out two before the strongest offense in the PacWest got on the board. A solo shot off the bat of Cole Kleszcz gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and three runs off three hits in the fifth put them up 4-0. Two more runs came off a two-run home run in the sixth, but a perfect seventh from Kaser and a scoreless inning apiece by senior pitcher
Ben Clegg and junior pitcher
Jayson Summers kept APU off the board in the final three innings. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth May refused the shutout, taking the first pitch he saw halfway up the net in left field to get the Urban Knights on the board, but the game ended next batter and the Knights fell 6-1.
With the loss, ART U drops to 14-21 overall and 6-18 in conference. Academy of Art will be at College of Alameda tomorrow for a PacWest doubleheader versus Azusa Pacific starting at noon.
