Matt Martin began as head coach of Academy of Art University men's soccer in November 2018 after serving as assistant coach since September 2018.
In Martin's first full year heading the program, ART U's 2019 campaign was marked by hard work, perseverance, and relentless positivity. AÂ late goal by senior Andrew Deans pushed the Urban Knights to a victory over Saint Katherine's highlighted the regular season and eight were bestowed
Academic All-PacWest honors at the conclusion of the academic year.
Taking over as interim head coach midway through the 2018 season, the team set a season-high in goals in their first match with him at the helm. Three matches later, the Urban Knights did it again with a 4-0 victory over Holy Names. At the end of the academic year, 11 men's soccer student-athletes were awarded
Academic All-PacWest honors.
Martin carries over 10 years of experience working as a scout for various Major League Soccer teams and is the director of scouting and co-founder of The Soccer Syndicate.
With The Soccer Syndicate, the country’s innovative Nationwide Scouting Network created in August, Martin oversees all levels of scouting and recruitment, leveraging a trained team of dispersed scouts and the latest technologies to support team-building from the amateur ranks to the first division. For the past 10 years, Martin has been a Major League Soccer scout with one of three teams in turn: New York Red Bulls, Sporting KC, and the Portland Timbers. Real Salt Lake is also client of The Soccer Syndicate with whom Martin manages an even larger nationally dispersed group of scouts for the MLS’ premier residency and academy development setup.
For three years (2015-18), Martin could be found as the director of domestic scouting for the Portland Timbers. He developed a scouting network under John Pascarella at Sporting KC from 2011 to 2015. Martin would train and manage the network which had also been made possible from his time as a regional scout (2008-2011) in MLS’ first scouting network developed by Jeff Agoos, technical director and head scout for the New York Red Bulls. Martin also worked for The Scouting Network (TSN of London, ENG) under Derek Bragg from 2007 to 2009.
