Phoenix, Ariz -- AAU Women's soccer came out in full force against Grand Canyon University Sunday evening. Not letting a solid GSU offense stand in the way, the Urban Knights were able to shut out their opponent. After holding the Antelopes scoreless in the first half, the Urban Knights capitalized on their strong offense and ended up taking the match 1-0, posting their second win on the season.
The AAU Women faced a tough Antelope team. The first 45 minutes of play was scoreless, before the Urban Knights turned the game around in the second half with the first and only goal of the night. The shot came 20 minutes into the second half on a header by junior defender Audrey Rudolf. It started when freshman Jessica Zopfi took the corner kick, freshman midfielder Lauren Johnson was able to flick it on, and Rudolf headed it past the keeper in the side net. This was Lauren Johnson's first assist, as well as Audrey Rudolf's first goal of the season.
The Urban Knights were able to hold the Antelopes for the rest of the game, despite being outshot 11-3. Freshman goal keeper Shelby Magallon had a major role in preserving the shut out for her team. She posted 11 saves on the game, adding to her 46 on the season already.
“I'm incredibly proud of the team for bouncing back after a tough loss at Dixie State. This is exactly what we needed to get our confidence back. The girls absolutely deserved the win tonight,” exclaimed head coach Courtney Cosso, sharing the excitement with her team. With the win, the Urban Knights improve their record to 2-8-1 overall.
After the short and emotion filled road trip, the AAU Women return home to face a very tough Sonoma State team on Wednesday, October 15th. Action is set to take place in Rohnert Park, CA, time TBA.
