The Urban Knights Drop Home Match Against Menlo College 3-1

Box Score

San Francisco, CA --
The Urban Knights looked unlike themselves tonight at Kezar Pavilion as they took on the Oaks of Menlo College. AAU handily beat the Oaks in their last meeting. They took the match in 3 out of four sets, 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, in the first of two non-conference contests inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion back on August 23.

Tonight it was apparent that Menlo College was hungry for the win as they were the more aggressive team from the start, the Oaks took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-19. AAU rallied back to take set three 25-19 but ultimately dropped the fourth set and the match, 25-23. This gives the Knights their seventh loss of the season, while Menlo College breaks even with a 9-9 record.

The first set saw AAU strike first, an attack error by Menlo and a kill by Jelena Jakovljevic gave AAU the early 2-0 advantage. The early 2-0 lead was AAU's only in the set. Although they managed to keep the score within one or two points and despite out hitting the Oaks 15 kills to 12 and having a higher hitting percentage .329 to .216 the Urban Knights were unable to overcome the Oaks and dropped set one 25-23.

The second set was much like the first. AAU again had the early 2-0, but would see Menlo college tie and then surpass them with a 4-10 run. The second set saw AAU commit seven errors and hit just .187 percent in the 25-19 loss.

The coaches of Academy of Art must have said something right during the break between the second and third set, because AAU started the third set on fire. The Urban Knights quickly jumped out a 10-8 lead with the help of two Jakovljevic kills. Academy of Art outscored Menlo College 15 - 10 to close out the third set and secure their 25-19 victory. Set three saw AAU hit an amazing .600 percent garnering 16 kills on 25 attempts.

It looked like in the fourth AAU would be able to get the win and push the game into a fifth and deciding set, unfortunately Menlo College outscored the Urban Knights 4-2 in the final points to take the fourth set and the match, 25-23.

For Menlo Deborah Bewowies had a team high 15 kills, while Sarah Poole added 11 of her own.  Stephanie Williams dished out 39 assists.

For the Urban Knights Amy Bush led all players with a match high 17 kills, Dan Yang was close behind with 16 kills and 16 digs, while
Jakovljevic chipped in with 13 kills. Melissa Cheng led all players with 49 assists she also knocked down 3 kills and had 6 digs on the night.

The Academy of Art returns to play on this Thursday when they take on Holy Names University at Tobin Gym in Oakland, Ca at 7:00 PM.
