AAU Volleyball Snatches Second Victory Away From Chaminade University

In their second meeting in less than a week the Academy of Art University Urban Knights defeated the visiting Silverswords in 4 sets, 25-17, 25-15, 22-25, and 26-24, Saturday evening at Kezar Pavilion. The Silverswords, who are just 2-13 overall and 1-5 in league kept both games close pushing both to four sets. For the Urban Knights Dan Yang had another breakout performance, finishing with 19 kills and 14 digs earning her 10th double-double this season. Close behind her was Jelena Jakovljevic who threw down 16 kills and 13 digs for her ninth double-double this season, Amy Bush added 13 kills on the night along with four block assists. Melissa Cheng dished out a match and career high 58 assists while also knocking down three block assists. The win brings the Urban Knights to 14-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The first set and second set were all AAU winning both in a pretty convincing fashion. The first set saw the Urban Knights start the match on a 13-4 run. During set one there was one tie, 1-1, and the Urban Knights never trailed. The Silverswords were able to cut the lead to five on several occasions but that was as close as they would get as AAU cruised to a 25-16 first set victory.

The second set was much like the first, only Chaminade was able to keep the match close until mid way through the set. Set two saw nine ties and three lead changes. It was a one to two point game up until the final tie of the set, 13-13, when three attack errors by Chaminade and back-to-back kills by Yang catapulted AAU to an 18-13 lead. AAU closed out the set on a 7-2 run, the Urban Knights allowed Chaminade to score just two more points before the set retired at 25-15.

The third set saw Chaminade come alive, they opened the set with a 9-4 run. The Urban Knights responded with a 7-3 run of their own to bring the score to within one, 12-13. A late game tie at 22 a piece would be as close as the Urban Knights would get to taking set three and the match, as the Silverswords closed the set scoring the final three points, giving them the 22-25 win.

The fourth and final set saw 15 ties and four lead changes, 10 if which came in the final 10 points of the match. Amy Bush, Jakovljevic and Dan Yang each recorded six kills in the final set. With the scored tied 23 a piece AAU closed the out the match with a 4-1 run, which gave them the 26-24 win and the match.

For Chaminade Whitney Viveiros and Chauntelle Maduli both finished with 14 and 15 kills respectfully. While Tanya Alvino dished out 45 assists and had 17 digs.

The win moves AAU up to 14-5 overall and 3-3 in league, their next match takes place against Hawaii Pacific University on Monday Oct. 5 at Kezar Pavilion for the teams final game in the two game series.
