AAU Volleyball Wraps Up Season at Home

...and so does senior Heather Allen

GRAND FINALE:
Despite the losses as of late, Academy of Art junior outside hitter Dan Yang (Beijing, China/Beijing 5th Sports School) has continued to dominate in PacWest play. Yang has been named the Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Nov. 9, for matches contested from Nov. 2-8.

This nomination marks Yangs' second this season. Yang totaled 39.5 points while averaging 6.58 points per game to lead the PacWest in both categories for the week. She also topped the conference in kills (36) and kills per game (6.00), while her .304 hitting average ranked sixth. She totaled her 39.5 points on 36 kills, two aces and three block assists. Top 10 PacWest Honorable mention honors this week. Bush led the PacWest in hitting for the week with a .528 average. She recorded 19 kills in 36 attempts without committing an error and averaged 2.71 kills per game to rank ninth in the league for the week. Bush averaged 3.50 points per game to tie for ninth in scoring average...totaled 24.5 points on the 19 kills and 11 block assists...ranked second in block average for the week (1.57).

FINISHING AT HOME:

The Urban Knights traveled to Phoenix, AZ last weekend to play back-to-back matches against Grand Canyon University. It was a tough road stint for them as they dropped both matches 0-3. The Knights returned home this week to gear up for matches against two teams in which they are winless against this season. The Urban Knights lost to both Norte Dame de Namur and Dixie State College 0-3 earlier in the season. Also finishing her AAU career is lone senior Heather Allen. Allen has recorded double-digit digs in 15 matches while recording a match and career high 23 digs in the Urban Knights 3-2 win over Holy Names University on Oct. 15, overall she is fourth on the team in digs with 272.

SCOUTING THE ARGOS:
Academy of Art University women's volleyball was defeated early in the season by Notre Dame de Namur University in three sets (36-34, 25-15, 25-21). Junior outside hitter Dan Yang posted a match-high 21 kills to go with 11 digs while junior outside hitter Jelena Jakovljevic had 11 kills and 11 digs. NDNU has five players. For the Argos five players have registered over 150 kills, with Caitin Torres leading the way with 311 kills and 77 blocks. Joanna Gresh has dished out 828 assists and recorded 175 digs.

SCOUTING THE REDSTORM:
The Dixie State Red Storm, who are currently ranked 2nd in the PacWest, dominated in all phases of their last match, sweeping the Academy of Art University, 3-0 (25-14, 28-26, 25-22). Dixie State has five players that have recorded over 100 kills this season. With Katie Luna leading the pack with 297. Chelsi DeWitt is nearing the 1000 mark in assists and sits at 910 overall. DeWtitt is avering 10.34 assists per game which puts her in second place in the PacWest conference just above AAU's Melissa Cheng.

LAST GAME RECAP:

AAU traveled to Phoenix, AZ to take on Grand Canyon University in back-to-back matches last weekend. Game one recap - The Urban Knights were defeated 3-0 by Grand Canyon University, in the Antelope Gymnasium, 16-25, 18-25, and 29-31. The Urban Knights' Dan Yang led all players with 19 kills committing just four errors and hitting a .357 percent on the night. Yang also racked up 11 digs to go with her 19 kills.

Game two recap - The Urban Knights hoped to turn the tables on the Lopes Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Antelope Gymnasium, but were stopped in their tracks dropping three straight sets, 12-25, 23-25, 23-25. The Knights have dropped seven of their last eight matches going into the final stretch.
