Phoenix, AZ --- The Urban Knights hoped to turn the tables on the Lopes Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Antelope Gymnasium, but were stopped in their tracks dropping three straight sets, 12-25, 23-25, 23-25. With the loss AAU falls to 17-14 overall and 4-10 in PacWest play. The Knights have dropped seven of their last eight matches with just three matches left in the season.
The match started off rough for AAU Saturday afternoon. The Urban Knights never led or a tied for the entirety of the set. They Only registered 8 kills to the Lopes 13 and as a team hit just .087 percent to that of GCU who finished the set with a .500 hitting percentage. Grand Canyon was virtually perfect committing just one error en route to their 25-12 victory.
With their first loss under their belt the Urban Knights began to pick up steam in the second set. AAU started on a quick 7-3 run. Grand Canyon, however, would rally back to tie the score at 9 a piece and on the very next play take their first lead of the set. The set would see nine more ties before AAU was defeated 25-23.
The third set was much like the last, it was a back and fourth battle that saw 13 ties and lead changes. The Urban Knights could not over power the Lopes and were again defeated by a 2-0 run after the game was tied 23-23.
For the Lopes senior Whitney Estes led GCU with 11 kills and a .455 attack average and three block assists. Senior Dana Edington ( Peoria , Ariz. /Centennial) had seven kills, a solo block and two block assists.
For the Urban Knights
Dan Yang lead all players for the second match in a row with 17 kills and 11 digs.
Nicolette Hagan was next on the list finishing with eight kills and two digs and one block solo.
Melissa Cheng dished out 24 assists.
AAU finishes up their 2009 season this week with two home matches, the first against NDNU on Thursday Nov. 12 at Kezar Pavilion, and their final match takes place at the College of San Mateo against Dixie State College.
