Urban Knights on the Road: The Women head into their second week of play following a tough opening week. The Academy of Art University, now 0-2, begins a five game road trip which includes three non conference and two conference matches. The Urban Knights don't play again until Saturday September 5th when they take on Cal State University L.A. They follow with Biola University (Calif.) and Menlo College (Calif.), before starting conference games the following week.
Scouting Cal State L.A.: CSULA was voted by the Division II California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) to finish 5th out of six teams in the South Division this season. Despite the low rankings, CSULA started their season off with a win against Central Washington. The Golden Eagles finishes the 2008 season with a 7-9-3 overall record. They are returning three key players in 2009 that were injured last season. The Golden Eagles are led by five seniors and 11 juniors. CSULA is returning Liz Franco who received All- California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) honors in 2008. Last season, Franco led the CCAA in assists with nine, and finished with four goals and a team high 17 points.
Scouting Biola University (Ca.): Biola finished the 2008 season with a 5-7-3 overall record and a 1-6-3 conference record. The Eagles have an experienced team, featuring seven seniors and eight juniors. Biola is returning their lead scorer from last season, Kahlie Reneicke. Now a senior, Reneicke was named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference Squad in 2008. She also led the Eagles last season with four goals and two assists for a total of 10 points. The Eagles are lead by head coach Todd Elkins. Biola opened their 2009 season with a tie against Cal State East Bay.
Menlo College (Ca.): Head coach Zach Masters and Assistant coach Sherman Trigg are both entering their third year at Menlo College this season. They led their team to a 10-7-1 overall record in 2008. However, the Oaks graduated their top six players from last season. Returning for Menlo is sophomore forward Amanda Torres who was named to the All-Cal Pac First Team as a freshman in 2008. Torres finished the 2008 season sixth in the conference for goals, with eight, and posted five assists. The Oaks are not set to start their 2009 season until September 4th.
Looking Ahead: After the non-conference three game road trip, the Urban Knights start official PacWest conference play against Notre Dame De Namur University on September 19th, in Belmont, CA. They follow with a game against Dominican University on September 21st, before returning home.
