San Francisco, CA--- The Urban Knights were tested by the visitors of Dominican University tonight at Kezar Pavilion. In a game that saw 31 lead changes and 21 tie scores it was not evident that the now 11-2 Urban Knights were playing against a team who has won just three games this season. AAU, however, defeated DU in four sets, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13. Junior outside hitter
Dan Yang (Beijing, China) finished with a match high 18 kills.
AAU got another impressive performance from Yang who notched her second consecutive double-double, tallying 18 kills and 10 digs. Melissa Cheng (Sunnyvale, CA) had another strong outing as well, tallying 41 assists, 10 digs, six kills and two block assists.Jelena Jakovljevic (Valjevo, Serbia) tallied 12 kills on 25 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage.
Amy Bush (Yucaipa, CA) posted nine kills and four block assists.
In the opening set the Urban Knights set the tempo, as the two sides traded points.Yang and Bush paved the way for AAU combining for six of the first seven points. An attack error by DU and a service ace by Yang started the Knights on a 7-3 run to end the set, 25-23.
Early in the second set Dominican took the lead thanks to errors by the Urban Knights. Jakovljevic got AAU back on track with a kill to pull the Knights to within one, 9-10. After a small run by the Penguins that pushed their lead to 16-22, AAU rallied back, bringing the score to 21-23. However, that was as close as AAU would get dropping set two, 22-25.
Dominican jumped out to the early lead in the third set after four attack errors by the Urban Knights put them up 7-8. A kill by Bush and an error on DU would put the Urban Knights up by one. Following that the Knights would not trail for the rest of the match, winning set three 25-22.
In the fourth and final set the Urban Knights proved to be too much for the Penguins to handle. As they cruised to a 25-13 victory.
The Urban Knights continue conference play tomorrow evening against NDNU. First serve is set for 7:00PM in Atherton, CA.
