Atherton, CA -- The Oaks of Menlo College proved that they could not handle the size of the Academy of Art University.The Urban Knights took down the Oaks, 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, in a non-conference contest inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion on Tuesday night.
It was the Oaks that started off strong, jumping ahead 11-4 early in the first set. Although Menlo still led 20-17 late into the set the Academy of Art was not beat yet. AAU would take its first lead when it scored the next five points en route to the win.
The Urban Knights carried their momentum from the first set into the second. A 15-15 score turned into a 25-16 decision thanks to three kills from the Urban Knights Amy Bush. In game three, both teams battled while neither side led by more than two points throughout most of the game. It wasn't until a Menlo kill and two aces established a 22-18 Menlo advantage. With the Oaks taking the set 20-25.
The Urban Knights would fight off a late rally to take the fourth game and the match. Academy of Art scored 10-of-12 points after tying the score at 13-13. AAU would score the five straight points to close out the match.
For Menlo College Katie Pendley and Kelsey Bailey each finished with a team-high 10 kills while Bekowies added eight kills and four blocks. Stephanie Williamson had 26 assists.
Dan Yang led all player with 20 kills, while Jelena Jakovljevic added 12, and Melissa Cheng registered 38 assists for Academy of Art.
Academy of Art is 12-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, AAU is set to take on the visiting Dixie State College on Friday Sept 25 at Kezar Pavilion, game time is set for 7:00PM.
