San Francisco, CA-- Continuing their home-stand, the Academy of Art University women's soccer team hosted Grand Canyon University on Saturday afternoon. The Urban Knights were able to score first taking an early two goal lead in the first half of the game. The 'Lopes answered back with a goal of their own at the end of the half and then tied the game at two a piece in the final minutes of regulation. After battling through two scoreless overtimes, the game ended with a final score of 2-2.
The Academy of Art University wasted little time and scored off Morgan LeFever's penalty kick in the first seventeen minutes of the game. With the momentum their way, the Urban Knights then scored another goal just ten minutes later. This time it was a goal by Jasmine Sharpe, assisted by Tanner McCandlish. With a two goal lead, the Urban Knights seemed to have control of the game. However, the 'Lopes were able to score a goal at the end of the half putting them back in the game.
The Urban Knight's defense was strong all day, but in the final few minutes of the second half, Grand Canyon University stepped up their offense. With the pressure on the Urban Knight's defense, the 'Lopes were able to score one more goal with just six minutes left in regulation play. This tied the game up and forced it into overtime. Both team's offenses were quiet in over time. The Antelopes had one shot in the first over time and two in second over time. The Urban Knights posted three shots in second over time. Overall the Antelopes out shot the Urban Knights 19-9, and had two more corner kicks than the Knights.
Sophomore Morgan LeFever had a great game for the Urban Knights. LeFever had two shots, including one shot on goal and one goal on the day. Freshman Jasmine Sharpe also did well with one shot on goal and one goal in the game. Sophomore goal keeper Solveig Barnes played the entire match, allowing two goals and posting nine saves on the day.
Grand Canyon University's Nicole Elias had a tremendous day for her team. Elias had five shots, four which were on goal and scored both goals for her team. Kaylen Jackson had a good game with eight shots, including five on goal and one assist, and both Kayla Poe and Jessica Scartz had one shot on goal in the game.
With the tie, the Academy of Art University's record is at 0-7-2 overall and 0-2-2 in conference, while Grand Canyon University's record is 0-1-1 in conference and 3-3-1 overall. The Urban Knights play again on Monday September 28th, where they host Dixie State. The game is set for 11:00am at Crocker-Amazon Park.
