San Francisco, CA --- The Urban Knights continued its impressive play this season, beating Chaminade University 3-1 in four close sets on Tuesday evening to improve to 13-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The Urban Knights dropped the first set by a 25-23 score, but took the final three, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22. Freshman Melissa Cheng dished out 44 assists and also added 10 digs in the victory. Both Dan Yang and Jelena Jakovljevic finished the night with double-doubles. Yang finished the match with 20 kills and 19 digs while Jakovljevic added 19 kills and 12 digs respectfully. The Urban Knights also, as a team, out blocked the Silverswords 22-1. Camille Board and Amy Bush tied with 6 blocks a piece with Bush finishing with 1 block solo and five block assists, while Board finished with six block assists.
In the first set, the Urban Knights came out aggressive, scoring five of the match's first six points. Chaminade however climbed back, drawing within two at 6-4 and then taking the lead 6-7 on a kill by Chauntelle Maduli. It would be a back and forth set that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. But it would be Chaminade however that scored the final three points to take the set 25-23.
The Silverswords scored the first two points of the second set but AAU rallied back scoring the next eight out of nine points. A quick point by Chaminde made the score 8-4 but AAU would run the score up 14-6 with a 6-2 run. The second set was all AAU as they cruised to a 25-14 victory. The Urban Knights out hit the Silverswords in the second set finishing with a .304 hitting percentage while the Silverswords finished with a .121 percentage.
In the third set, AAU started off scoring the first six points before a CHU kill sparked a six point run of their own. A run which put AAU down for the first and last time of the set. The Urban Knights used a set-high five kills from Jakovljevic to take the third set 25-20.
The final set saw five ties and just one lead change as as neither team could manage a lead larger than two towards the end of the set. Nicolette Hagan evened up the score for the final time at 21 apiece. The Urban Knights finished the set on a 4-1 run, taking the fourth set 25-22.
For Chaminade three players finished with kills in the double digits. Whitney Viveiros finished with 14, while Chauntelle Maduli added 11, and Malilimago Toailoa chipped in with 10. Tanya Alvino dished out 39 assists on the night to go with her 11 digs.
The Urban Knights return to Kezar Pavilion tomorrow night when they play Hawaii Pacific University at 7:00 PM.
