Women's Volleyball Drops Close Match with HPU

Box Score

San Francisco, CA--
The Urban Knights dropped another close match against the visiting Hawaii Pacific University Sea Warriors tonight at Kezar Pavilion. Although AAU was able to keep each set close they lost in three 25-23, 25-23, and 27-25. Despite scoring first in each set, the Sea Warriors' defensive strength proved to be too much for the Knights to handle. With the win HPU improves to 7-6 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference. For the Urban Knights Jelena Jakovljevic and Dan Yang recorded back-to-back double-doubles, Yang finished with a match high 14 kills and 13 digs, while Jakovljevic added 11 kills and 14 digs. Melissa Cheng dished out a match high 29 assists, had five digs and knocked down three block assists on the night.

During set one the Urban Knights struck first, jumping out to an early 3-2 lead. However, HPU would score the next three points to put them up 4-3 over the Knights. A kill by Yang gave AAU a temporary 5-4 advantage, which would be their final lead of the set. As the set continued both teams traded points and despite closing the set on a 4-2 run, which was sparked by a Yang kill that brought the score to 20-23, it was HPU who was able to stave off the come back and retire the first set 23-25.

Set two saw AAU again attack first, two Amy Bush kills and an attack error by HPU gave the Urban Knights a 3-0 lead. Hawaii Pacific answered by scoring the next nine out of ten points, giving them a 4-9 advantage. Much like the first set it was a back and fourth battle between the Urban Knights and the Sea Warriors. A Jakovljevic ace brought the Knights to within one, 23-24. But it was an HPU kill by Mariana Souza that gave them the 25-23 win.

The Urban Knights came out in set three and again had the early lead. A 6-3 run by HPU would tie the game at eight a piece, but the next seven out of nine points went to the Sea Warriors putting them ahead 15-10 mid way through the set. AAU would retaliate with a 7-2 run of their own to tie the game at 17-17. A Camille Board kill gave the Urban Knights their first lead since the beginning of the set and put them up 23-22. The game would see three more ties before HPU scored the final three points for the set and the match. The loss drops AAU to 2-3 in conference and 13-5 overall.

For HPU Mariana Souza had a team high 11 kills along with eight digs and two blocks. Julia Gruszecka and Natasha Bell both finished with nine kills, while Bell added 13 digs. Madison Hardy and Kelly Keating shared the setter responsibilities dishing out 22 and 14 assists respectfully.

The Urban Knights return to Kezar when they take on Chaminade University for the second and final time this season on Saturday Oct. 3, game time is set for 7:00 PM.
