Softball Readies to Play Fall Games This Weekend

San Francisco, CA – The Academy of Art University's softball team will play their only games of the fall season this weekend in Hayward, CA. After just a month of practice, the ladies are gearing up for some serious competition as they participate in the Battle of the Bay Tournament on October 9th and 10th. The tournament will be held at Alden Sports Complex.

The women will play four games over the two days facing both Division I and Junior College teams. They begin the tournament with perhaps the toughest game of the weekend against UC Davis (Division I) at 12:00 noon on Oct. 9. The Urban Knights then finish the day with a game against Sacramento City College at 4:00 pm.

In the second day of the tournament, the Knights will play against the College of San Mateo at 2:00 pm, followed by their final game of the fall season. In the final game, they play another well established team, Saint Mary's University (Division I) at 4:00 pm. All four teams that the Knights face are dominating teams in their respected conferences. The Urban Knights will definitely be tested as they step onto the field in the fall.

Nicole Smith
Head Coach Rachel Sherman is back in action in her third season with the Urban Knights. Sherman who has been here from the beginning, is returning almost the entire team from last year. The team consists of eleven returners, and has added six newcomers to the roster.

The Knights are returning junior Sierrah Garcia who led the PacWest conference last year in strikeouts with 200, and was named to the All PacWest Second Team (P). The team is also returning senior slugger Alana Aweau who has been offensively stellar for the Knights. She finished second in the conference last season with 11 home runs.

After the fall games, the Urban Knights head back to the practice field before the start of their official season on February 3rd. The fall schedule does not count towards the team's regular season results and stats.
