San Francisco, CA--- Tonight the Academy of Art women's volleyball team played their final home game of the 2010 season. With a complete team effort, ART U was able to dominate the Penguins of Dominican University for a 3-0 victory. The Academy of Art women's volleyball team honored their seniors,
Dan Yang and
Jelena Jakovljevic, in front of their biggest home crowd of the season.
"It felt great to win tonight in front of all the fans, and on our seniors' final game on this court," said Head Coach Allison Magner. "They came to play today, Hawaii definitely prepared us for this win," Magner continued.
ART U controlled the match from the opening set, beating the Penguins 25-11, 25-21, 25-12. "The fight is still there and we continue to mature as a team every time we step on the floor," Magner said. The win bumps ART U into fourth place with a 9-6 conference record and a 14-11 overall record. The loss keeps the Penguins winless in conference and drops their overall record to 3-25.
The Urban Knights bested the Penguins in almost every category tonight. They kept Dominican to just 11 points in the first set, while as a team, the Knights hit .435. With the score tied 6-6 early, the Urban Knights would open up a 10 point lead with senior
Dan Yang at the serve. Yang served for 10 straight points and recorded four aces during the teams 10-1 run, 17-7. Dominican would score just four more points before the set was retired, 25-11.
The Penguins kept game two interesting until midway through the set. However, the Urban Knights' hitting seemed to be too powerful for the Penguins late in the game, as they would ultimately drop game two to ART U, 25-19.
During set three is when the Urban Knights really gave the crowd something to cheer about. They opened the set on an 11-3 run. The run was sparked by two DU errors and a kill by
Dan Yang. The senior registered eight of her team high 12 kills within the third and final set. The Urban Knights would go on to defeat Dominican 25-12, and take the match in three straight sets.
The Urban Knights held the Penguins to just 16 kills over three sets and a meager .044 hitting percentage.
Seluia Falealili led the charge for the penguins, finishing the night with a match high 13 kills. Senior Brooke Swingle added a team high 18 assists. As a team, the Penguins out blocked the Urban Knights 5-2.
The day could not have gone any better for the Urban Knights and their seniors.
Dan Yang who ends her play at Kezar Pavilion as an Urban Knight left it all on the floor. The senior finished the night with a team high 12 kills and four service aces. The scoring was distributed evenly amongst the Urban Knight athletes.
Angela Heath finished the match with eight kills, while
Amy Bush chipped in with seven.
Melissa Cheng had a solid night, finishing the match with 31 assists, five kills, and five aces.
Camille Board and
Nicolette Hagan each pitched in four kills.
Tonight's match marks ART U's final game at Kezar Pavilion for the 2010 season. Urban Knight volleyball will play their final game of the season Saturday Nov 13, when they take on Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, CA. Opening Tip is set for 7:00 PM
