Softball Splits in Day One of Desert Stinger Tournament

 The  Academy of Art University softball team played day one of the Desert Stinger Tournament on Friday afternoon. In their first game of the tournament, the Urban Knights faced off against Saint Martin's University where the Knights came out victorious with a 4-3 win. In the second game, AAU battled Montana State University – Billings, a nationally ranked team. The Urban Knights were not able to catch the Yellowjackets and ended up losing with a score of 4-1.

 The Urban Knights batted first against the Saint Martin's Saints and were able to take an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. From there, the Knight's pitcher Kimberly Dauer stepped up and was able to shutout the Saints for the first three innings of the game. The Saints started to make a come-back by scoring one run in the fourth and then two more runs in the sixth.

Saint Martin's pitching staff kept the Urban Knights' offense quiet after the first inning rally. But in the top of the seventh inning, with the score tied at three, the Knights were able to push one more run across to again take the lead. The Saints could not answer back and AAU came out on top with a score of 4-3.

Junior Ashley Lokey had a great game for the Urban Knights. She went 2-4 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. Junior Alana Aweau went 1-2 with a stolen base and a run scored, and freshman Andrea Hanchey also went 1-2 in the game.

Freshman Kimberly Dauer was in the circle for the Urban Knights. Kim went seven innings pitched giving up three earned runs and two walks, and recorded eight strikeouts in the outing. Her record is now 1-0.

For the Saint's, Eugenio stood out going 2-3 with a home run, a double, one run scored and two runs batted in. B. Klemm also did well going 2-4 with a double and a run scored. On the mound was Arnzen who threw seven innings giving up four runs (all unearned), four walks, and four strikeouts.

 

 

In the second game, the Knights took on the NFCA ranked Montana State University- Billings. After a scoreless first inning, the Yellowjackets were able to settle down and put up two runs in the second inning off a home run. The Urban Knights were able to answer back with a run of their own in the third inning cutting the Yellowjacket's lead in half.

A solid pitching performance and strong defense allowed the Knights to keep things close for most of the game, but in the late innings of the game, MSU Billings would add to their lead by scoring two more runs in the sixth. That was enough to hold the Urban Knights and they ended up losing with a score of 4-1.

Again, junior Ashley Lokey put up big numbers for AAU offensively. She went 2-3 in the game with one run scored and a double. Freshman Nicole Smith stepped up for her team and went 1-3 in the second game.

Sophomore Sierrah Garcia pitched a great game for the Academy of Art University. She went seven innings pitched giving up five hits, four earned runs, two walks, and posted nine strikeouts. Her record now stands at 1-1.

For the Yellowjackets, Parson and Hoffman came up big for their team. Parsons went 1-2 with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored; while Hoffman went 1-3 with a homerun, one run scored and two runs batted in.

The Yellowjasket's pitcher through a good game pitching all seven innings, giving up only three hits, one earned run, three walks and eight strikeouts.

After the day's games, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 2-1-1 overall, while Saint Martin's record falls to 0-1 and MSU Billings' record improves to 1-0. The Urban Knights play next on Saturday, February 13th at 4:00 and 6:00 PM. The Knights play Colorado School of Mines first, followed by Augustana (SD). Games will be played at Majestic Park field in Las Vegas, NV.
