Atherton, CA- The Academy of Art University played a mid-day double header against Cal Pac conference members Menlo College on Saturday afternoon. The Urban Knights came out strong, and kept at it the whole day. Solid pitching combined with explosive offense, and tough defense, allowed the Urban Knights to succeed in a sweep against Menlo. They took the first game 7-1, and concluded game two with a score of 4-1.
The Urban Knights were kept quiet for the first few innings of game one, as both teams were scoreless through the third inning. Things then exploded for the Urban Knights in the top of the fourth, when sophomore Jayme Stewart got things going with a leadoff single. She was followed by Alana Aweau's double, and from the there the Knights rallied to pull together a total of five hits and four runs. AAU had a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the inning, but the Oaks answered back by putting up a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
The Urban Knights added to their lead by scoring twice in the fifth, and once in the sixth. With the powerful pitching performance by the Academy of Art University's pitchers, they were able to shut down the Oaks for the remainder of the game and the Urban Knights took the game with a score of 7-1.
With the explosive offense, several of the Urban Knights' players put up big numbers in the first game. Sophomore Jayme Stewart went 2-4 with two runs scored, junior Alana Aweau went 2-4 with a double and a run scored, and both senior Shampayne Clay and sophomore Melissa Coe also went 2-4. Sophomore Sierrah Garcia went 2-3 with two runs batted in, and one run scored.
Starting on the mound was freshman Kimberly Dauer who pitched a solid game. She went six innings pitched, giving up one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Sierrah Garcia came in for relied in the 7th inning, and posted one strikeout to secure the win for the Knights. Dauer received the win for her team.
For the Oaks, Nadia Le'I went 2-2, Joedee Lovell went 1-2 with a double, and Angela Woerz went 1-3. On the mound was Jessica Cobb who went five innings pitched, giving up 10 hits, five earned runs, and three walks.
The Urban Knights outhit the Oaks 10-4, and had a perfect defense by recording no errors.
In game two of the double header, Menlo College attacked first, and jumped out to an early one run lead in the bottom of the first inning. After threatening with runners in scoring position in the top of the first inning, the Knights were able to capitalize on their threats and scored two runs of their own in the second.
With scoreless innings for both teams in the third and the fourth innings, the Knights pulled away when they scored two more runs in the fifth, starting with a leadoff home run by junior Alana Aweau. After another strong pitching performance, AAU was able to hold the Oaks scoreless for the rest of the game. They ended up winning with a score of 4-1.
Again the Urban Knights' offense came alive and many players had impressive numbers in game two. Junior Alana Aweau led by going 3-4 with a home run. Junoir Ashley Lokey stood out going 2-4 with a double and two runs batted in, and senior Shampayne Clay and freshman Nicole Smith both went 2-4. Sophomore Melissa Coe also did well going 1-2 with two runs scored, and nabbed two stolen bases; and sophomore Sierrah Garcia also went 1-2 with one run scored, and one run batted in.
Receiving the win for AAU was sophomore Sierrah Garcia who went six innings pitched, giving up one earned run, one walk, and posted seven strikeouts. Kimberly Dauer came in for the 7th inning and went one inning with one strikeout.
Lead hitters for the Oaks were Jamie Pauley who went 2-2, Angela Woerz who went 2-4 with a double and one run scored, and Courtney Emry and Nadia Le'I who both went 1-3. Receiving the loss was Mikayela Viramontes who went seven innings pitched giving up two earned runs, one walk, and had one strikeout.
The Urban Knights recorded 11 hits, and again were solid on defense with no errors.
After the sweep, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 5-5-1 overall, while Menlo College's record falls to 1-5 overall. The Urban Knights play next on Wednesday, February 24th against Cal State Monterey Bay. Game times are set for 12:00 and 2:00 PM in Seaside, CA.
