Turlock, CA-
In their first games of the 2010 season, the Urban Knights came out victorious over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights put up 13 hits in game one of the double header, and were able to easily overpower the Warriors with a score of 11-6. The second game tested the Knights as they had to come from behind. The game was tied in the fifth inning, before umpires called the game due to darkness. The game ended in a 5-5 tie.

The Academy of Art University jumped on the board first in game one. They pushed two runs across to take an early lead. The Warriors answered back in the bottom of the inning, when they scored a run. But the Knights showed no signs of stopping. They tacked on one more run in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.

The Warrior's started to make a comeback in the late innings of the game, cutting the lead to within three. AAU then stepped up and posted three more runs in the seventh. They held the Warriors for the rest of the game and ended up with an 11-6 win.

“I'm really proud of how well they executed,” said Coach Sherman. “They were getting hits and making plays in the keys moments of the game.”

Sophomore Jayme Stewart had a tremendous game offensively. Stewart went 3-3 with a double, one run scored, and three runs batted in. Junior Ashley Lokey also did well going 3-5 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Shampayne Clay and Nicole Smith both scored two runs each in the game. Clay also hit two doubles.

“Jayme had a great day at the plate and it is great to have her back behind the plate and in the lineup,” added Sherman.

Sophomore pitcher Sierrah Garcia threw a complete game and recorded the win for her team. She allowed five hits and nine earned runs while posting seven strikeouts in the game. Her record is 1-0.

For the Stanislaus Warriors, Missy Corral led the team going 2-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in during the first game. Jennifer Arnold was on the mound and went seven innings pitched, giving up 13 hits and 10 earned runs. Her record is now 0-1.

In game two of the double header the Warriors came out attacking hard, eager for a win. The Urban Knights were still hot at the start of the game and again scored first, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first. The Warrior's pitcher was able to keep the Urban Knights scoreless for several innings and in doing so Stanislaus was able to take the lead. After scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Warriors had a 4-2 lead over the Knights.

The Urban Knights wasted no time, and were able to score three runs in the fifth when junior Alana Aweau hit a towering three run homerun. This put the Knights up by one; but the Warriors rallied to push across a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth to tie things at five. Before the Knights could take their at bats in the sixth, the umpires called the game because of darkness. The final score was 5-5.

Junior Alana Aweau put up big numbers for the Knight's in the second game. She went 2-3 with a homerun, one run scored and four runs batted in. Shampayne Clay (who again doubled) and Ashley Lokey each went 1-3 and Melissa Coe scored two runs in the game.

Kimberly Dauer was in the circle for the Urban Knights and recorded the no decision. Dauer went 4.2 innings pitched giving up five hits and four earned runs, and nabbed three strikeouts.

The Warrior's Jennifer Arnold, Kiley Mendez, and Ashton Brown each went 1-2 in the game. Arnold recorded a home run, two runs scored and one run batted in. B. Weatherford was on the mound for the Warriors. She went five innings pitched with six hits and four earned runs.

After the double header the Urban Knight's record is 1-0-1 overall and Cal State Stanislaus' record is 0-1-1. The Academy of Art University takes action again on Saturday, February 6th against Cal State East Bay. Game time is set for 12:00 and 2:00 PM in Hayward, CA.
