Brisbane, CA – The Academy of Art University's softball team held their last non-conference games of the season against Holy Names University on Wednesday afternoon. The games were evenly matched, as both games were close. The Urban Knights couldn't get their offense going in either game as it showed in the outcome. AAU came away victorious in the first game with a score of 4-3 in eight innings, off a walk off home run by junior Alana Aweau. But the women came up short in game two, and they fell to the Hawks with a score of 1-2.
The Urban Knights jumped on the board first in game one when they pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With bases loaded, junior Ashley Lokey scored from third on a wild pitch. Junior Alana Aweau then singled to center field to score senior Shampayne Clay and sophomore Sierrah Garcia. That gave the Knights an early lead which they sat on for most of the game. The Hawks however, answered back with a run of their own in the top of the second inning.
Holy Names then tied things up in the top of the sixth inning when they scored two runs. That took the game into extra innings as they Knights were not able to capitalize on any more of their base runners. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Aweau hit a line drive well over the fence in right-center field, for her second walk-off home run of the season. That was the go ahead run for the Knights, and her hit lifted AAU over the Hawks to take the first game with a score of 4-3.
Aweau had a great offensive game for the Urban Knights. She went 3-4 with a home run, one run scored, and three runs batted in. Lokey also did well going 1-2 with one run, and Garcia went 1-3 with one run scored.
Freshman Kimberly Dauer started in the circle for AAU. She went five innings pitched giving up six hits, three runs (only one earned run), and had six strikeouts. Garcia came in for relief and went three innings and received the win in the game. Garcia gave up no hits, no runs, one walk, and had two strikeouts.
Lead hitters for the Hawks were Taryn Thomas who went 2-3 with a double, one run and one run batted in, and Kara Ferguason who also went 2-3 with a double, one run and one RBI. Laurel Clough went 1-3 with one run, and Allison Snider went 1-3 in the game.
M. Talbott-Benavidez received the loss in the game. She went 7.1 innings pitched giving up four hits, four earned runs, four walks, and had four strikeouts.
The Urban Knights scored four runs on six hits, left seven runners on base, and committed three errors in the game.
The second game was much like the first one for the Urban Knights. After coming out with an early lead, they could not keep their offense going, and were unable to bring in any of their runners in scoring position. The Knights took an early lead when they scored one run in the bottom of the second, when Aweau doubled, to score Clay from second. The women were then shut down by the Holy Name's pitcher for the remainder of the game.
The Hawks tied things up when they scored in the top of the third, and then took over the lead in the top of the sixth when they pushed across another run. The one run lead would prove to be enough to hold the Knights. AAU couldn't manufacture any more runs, and lost the non-conference game 1-2 to HNU.
Aweau had another strong offensive game for the Knights as she went 1-2 with a double, and one run batted in. Garcia also went 1-2 in the game, while Lokey went 1-3 with one run scored, and sophomore Melissa Coe also went 1-3 with a double. Clay was the only Urban Knight to score in the game and went 0-2 with one run.
Garcia was on the mound and received the loss in the game. She went seven innings pitched giving up six hits, two runs (only one earned), two walks, and had five strikeouts.
For the Hawks, Alexia Moctezuma went 2-3 with a double, and one run, Kara Ferguson went 2-3 with one run batted in, and both Susan Robertson and Taryn Thomas both went 1-2 in the game.
Stephanie Fairclough received the win in the game giving up four hits, one earned run, four walks, and had nine strikeouts in the game.
The Urban Knights scored one run on four hits, left five runners on base, and committed one error.
After the split, The Academy of Art University's record is at 22-20-1 overall, and Holy Names University's record is at 18-18 overall. The Knights resume PacWest conference play on Saturday and Sunday against Dominican University. There is a pre-game BBQ before the games on Saturday, April 17th starting at 12:30 PM. All games will be held at Mission Blue field in Brisbane, CA.
