Warrensburg, MO --- The ART U women's volleyball team wound up on the losing end of a tough battle against #8 University of Indianapolis, dropping the match in three sets (15-25, 18-25, 22-25).
Dan Yang had 14 kills and seven digs in the loss. The Urban Knights drop to 3-2 while the Greyhounds improve to 4-1 on the season.
It was no surprise that the Urban Knights would have their work cut out for them as they entered the Peggy Martin Classic. ART U was first pit against the University of Indianapolis, who dropped just two matches last season and finished their 2009 season ranked fourth in the nation.
Riding high off their last win over the Clan from Simon Fraser, ART U came out scoring the first three points of the match. But, the Greyhounds fired back, scoring 10 of the next 12 points. Just as the Greyhound's found their groove the Urban Knights lost theirs, committing errors over the next several plays, including one which gave U Indy the win, 25-15.
The Urban Knights played tit-for-tat with the Greyhounds in the second, keeping them within striking distance until midway through the set. With ART U down three, 10-13, Indianapolis went on a run that could not be matched, and opened up a six point advantage over the Urban Knights, 20-14. Academy of Art would go on to score just four points before retiring the set, 25-18.
Set three looked as if the Urban Knights were coming alive, starting the game with a 9-2 run. However, the Greyhounds clawed their way back into the match, tying the set by scoring eight of the next nine points, 10-10. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the set, 12-13, on a kill by Kristina Kerrigan. The set went back and fourth, seeing three ties with the final one reached at 21-21. A few errors down the stretch gave U Indy the extra push they needed to defeat ART U 25-22.
For the Greyhounds Hannah Kelzer lead the team with 14 kills. Kristina Hefferan added 10, while Courtney Anglemyer had 34 assists.
ART U was once again lead offesnively by
Dan Yang who finished the match with 14 kills and seven digs.
Camille Board and
Melissa Cheng both added five kills a piece, while Cheng added 22 assists. "Camille did a great job transitioning and playing offensive for us like we were working on all week," said Associate Head Coach Ali Magner.
Ashley Irvine and
Leinani Keanini each had 11 and 10 digs respectively on the defensive end.
ART U drops to 2-3 on the season, and returns to the court to play Edinboro university at 4:45 (2:45 PST).
GAME #2 BOX SCORE
Just hours after being defeated by University of Indianapolis the Urban Knights took the floor again, this time against Edinboro University (3-1). ART U struggled from the floor hitting .099 percent, and connecting on just 24 kills, while the Scouts finished the match hitting .287 and had 41 kills. The Scouts took the match in three sets (21-25, 17-25, 18-25) and improve to 4-1 while ART U drops to 2-4.
Edinboro silenced the Knights offensively keeping ART U's leading attacker to just nine kills on 21 attempts. But despite that, the Urban Knights were just a few points shy of changing the outcome of the match in each set. With their offense shut down, the Urban Knights focused on defense, "Our blocking and serving was tremendously improved for both games, we worked hard on that all week and I was happy to see that even though we weren't hitting well we were defending well," Coach Magner said.
The first set saw ART U within two points on a kill by
Dan Yang, 8-10. following that play the Scouts outscored the Urban Knights,6-2, to extend their lead to 10-16. The Knights, however, did not give up, they went on an 8-3 run which brought them to within one point, 18-19. ART U would not score another point in the match, errors and kills by the Scouts would give them the 25-21 win.
Jelena Jakovljevic opened set two with a kill to put the Knights up early. ART U maintained their lead even after the Scouts tied the set 10-10. With the scoreboard reading 14-14 Edinboro's Gina Booth gave the Scouts their first and final lead of the set. The Urban Knights would go on to score just three more points as EU outscored ART U 11-3 to take set two, 17-25.
Much like in game one of the day the third saw ART U really come alive. The Urban Knights battled with the tough Edinboro squad until the final ball. Unfortunate errors down the stretch cost ART U the match, as the Scouts took the game on a 25-20 win.
For Edinboro Seth Sullivan lead the charge with a match high 11 kills to go with four assits and three digs. Megan Osysko dished out a match high 29 assists and knocked down five kills. Gina Boothe and Beyaca Martin each had eight and six kills respectfully in the match.
ART U was led by
Dan Yang who had nine kills, and six digs.
Leinani Keanini finished with a match high 11 digs .
Angela Heath chipped in with eight kills on the match and three block assists. "Angie played exceptional in both games, she stayed consistent all game long and provided energy and offense for us," said Magner.
"The main thing we need to work on continuing into tomorrow is diversifying our offense, if we do that, I think we will be harder for teams to handle," said Magner.
The Urban Knight finish up play tomorrow with two games against Eckerd College (10:00AM GMT and East Central University 2:30PM GMT)
