San Francisco, CA --- The Urban Knight women's volleyball team started conference play with a bang, beating Notre Dame de Namur in four sets, (25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18). The win gives ART U their second in a row. The Urban Knights hope to continue this streak; first, into tomorrow's non-conference match with Holy Names University, and then into their back-to-back matches with Grand Canyon University.
The Urban Knights were like a well oiled machine, out matching the Argo's in every category. Dan Yang once again led the Urban Knights offensively finishing with 18 kills and 14 digs. However, every ART U player contributed on the floor in tonight's win. Angela Heath and Caitlin Boring each had 10 kills a piece. Melissa Cheng had an outstanding match, dishing out 45 assists. The Sophomore also contributed 10 digs and four kills in the victory. Leinani Keanini had 25 digs in the match, while Amy Bush had a season high seven block assists.
The Urban Knights controlled the game from the start. ART U's strong presence at the net mixed with their powerful attack silenced the Argo's play. The Urban Knights finished the match with 11 team blocks to NDNU's four, and 54 kills to the Argo's 43. The ART U defense was also stellar, three players finished with double digit digs; Keanini led the way with 25.
The fourth set is when ART U really established their dominance, the Urban Knights kept the Argo's to just one point throughout the first seven plays. Then NDNU scored their fist double digit point of the set as ART U was just eight points shy of the win. A crowd roaring kill gave Academy of Art the win and a 1-0 record in conference.
The Argo's were led by Christin Villamayor, who had 14 kills and 10 digs in the match. Anna Jayo had 31 assists, five kills and six digs. Alyana Galeai finished with 12 digs.
The win puts ART U at 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in conference. The Urban Knights return to the floor tomorrow evening when they play a non-conference match against Holy Names University. Game time is set for 7:30PM at Tobin Gym.
