Women's Volleyball Beats Lopes in Five Sets

San Francisco, CA ---  The Urban Knight women's volleyball team defeated the Antelopes of Grand Canyon University in five sets tonight at Kezar Pavilion (25-19,25-12,24-26,24-26,15-11). The win marks ART U's fourth in a row under Interim Head Coach Alison Magner. PacWest player of the week Dan Yang had an outstanding game finishing with 21 kills and 16 digs.

ART U established their dominance early opening up a 2-0 lead over the Lopes. The second set, in which the Urban Knights held GCU to just 12 set points gave fans and coaches much to cheer about. Yang had six of her 21 kills in the second set alone. As a team ART U was four points shy of the win when Grand Canyon scored their first double-digit point, 21-10. The Urban Knights out hit the Antelopes  14 kills to seven, and kept GCU to a -.033 hitting percentage.

It looked as if the Urban Knights would take the win in three sets, but a determined Grand Canyon team had another plan. The Lopes came from three down at the end of the third set to take the match to a fourth, 24-26. Much like set three, GCU was able to weather the attacking power of the Urban Knights to win the fourth by two, 24-26.

Having missed their opportunity to close out the game, the Urban Knights made easy work of Grand Canyon in the fifth and final set. Despite being down 4-6 early ART U rallied with a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the fifth, 8-6. After the teams switched sides the Urban Knights closed the match by scoring seven of the last 11 points, 15-11.

For Grand Canyon Megan Toth had a team high 11 kills and 11 digs. Kristen Pr.each dished out 34 assists, while Erica Ehlo chipped in with nine kills and two block assists.

Dan Yang recorded her 10th double-double of the season finishing with 21 kills and 16 digs. Amy Bush really stepped up for the Urban Knights as well, recording 11 kills and seven block assists and two block solos. Melissa Cheng had a career high 56 assists to go with five kills and nine digs. Angela Heath and Camille Board added 10 and nine kills respectively, while Leinani Keanini had a team high 17 digs.

The win puts ART U at 6-5 overall and 2-0 in conference, while Grand Canyon drops to 4-9 and 0-2 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights take the floor again Friday September 24 when they challenge Grand Canyon University for the second time. Opening serve is set for 7:00 PM.
