San Francisco, CA --- The Academy of Art women's volleyball team battled a strong willed Grand Canyon University squad to five close sets tonight at Kezar Pavilion. Coming off a five set victory over the Lopes just two days ago, the Urban Knights were eager to complete the sweep, and that they did. ART U defeated Grand Canyon in five sets (20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 19-25, 15-12). Four Urban Knight players finished the match with double digit kills.
Dan Yang led the charge for the 11th straight game, finishing with 19 kills and 14 digs.
Camille Board and
Angela Heath each contributed 11 kills apiece with
Board knocking down a team high four block assists. Sophomore setter
Melissa Cheng had an outstanding game, dishing out a match high 43 assists to go with her 10 kills.
It was truly a team effort tonight for the Knights as all players contributed in the win. But, despite that effort it was a tough win for ART U, as Grand Canyon took the court tonight with a purpose of redemption. The Urban Knight offense struggled during set one, getting out hit 17 kills to 12, and committing six errors to the Lopes five, and despite a late surge, it was Grand Canyon who took set one 25-20.
The second set was as close as it could get, with no team leading by more than two points. Strong offense for ART U late in the game allowed them to narrowly edge out the Antelopes 26-24. Then, just as fast as the Urban Knights gained their momentum they lost it as Grand Canyon came roaring back taking set three and four in convincing fashion, 20-25 and 19-25.
With their win streak on the line the Urban Knights pulled out all the stops in the fifth set, blazing out to a 12-8 lead over Grand Canyon. But, much like the rest of the night, the Lopes didn't go down without a fight. Down 12-8, Grand Canyon went on a 4-1 run to bring them to within one point. However, the Urban Knights kept their composure and closed the set on a 2-0 run, 15-12.
The Lopes were led by Erica Ehlo who finished the match with 19 kills and 15 digs. Megan Toth added 14 kills and eight digs, while setter Kristen Preach dished out 42 assists and had six block assists.
The loss drops Grand Canyon to 4-9 on the season, while ART U improves to 7-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play. The Urban Knights return to the court next weekend when they play back-to-back matches agianst Dixie State College in Utah.
