KNIGHTS ON THE MARCH
The Knights earned their second tie in two weeks after another double-overtime battle on Saturday against Dominican.
Hannah Emmett scored early off a corner kick, and Kaitlynn Baptista scored for the Lady Penguins in the 84th minute to push it to overtime. Academy of Art got two shots off in overtime, but the game ended deadlocked at 1-1.
FAIR OR FOUL
The game against Dominican included 23 fouls on the Lady Penguins. Baptista, who scored the equalizer, was the recipient of two of the seven yellow cards for Dominican, which resulted in the Knights playing the final two minutes of the second overtime with a man advantage. “I think the game got a bit too out of control in the second half. I feel my team was the dominant program on the pitch," head coach Aileen Nasypany said. "It seemed Dominican's way of stopping us was through fouls. Their team received a conference high for yellow cards in one match, which included a team yellow card and one that was a double yellow resulting in a red. They fouled us 23 times, which is more than most games two-team total combined.”
LOPES LEAD ON
Grand Canyon is second in the conference in goals (28) and third in goals per game (2.33). Dating back to their visit to Hawaii, the Antelopes have scored 7, 0, 0, 5, 3, and 4 goals heading into the two-game swing with the Knights. Junior midfielder/forward Marina Nesic was named PacWest Conference Player of the Week for her six-point week, posting two straight games with a goal and an assist. Nesic leads the conference in shots (73), shots per game (6.64), is tied for first in points (22), and is second in total goals (9).
NOT TO BE OUTDONE
Now that
Margret Thorolfsdottir has tied
Hannah Emmett's 2010 points mark, Emmett is now pushing to recapture that title in 2011. After her goal against Dominican, Emmett (2011) has eight points, only four behind Emmett (2010) and Thorolfsdottir, who both have 12 points. Emmett is alone atop the career scoring mark for the Knights, with 20 total points in her tenure at Academy of Art.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Knights only have five games remaining on the schedule, and after the two games against Grand Canyon they will host a final homestand against BYU-Hawaii (Oct. 26), Dominican for the third time (Nov. 4), and Hawaii-Hilo (Nov. 6).
