San Francisco, CA -- The Academy of Art women's soccer team had been stuck on their win total from 2009 for all of October, but all they needed was a turn of the calendar page to get back in the win column and set a new program mark for season wins. The Lady Penguins of Dominican put up a fight, just as they have all season, but the Knights would not be denied, and prevailed in overtime by a score of 4-3.
"Today marked a special day in ART U women's soccer as we have reached a new win total for the program," Head coach Aileen Nasypany said. "I feel very blessed to do it with this amazing group of particular female student-athletes. It is because of their strong work-ethic, their dedication to our team goals, and their loyalty to my coaching philosophy that we were able to set a new standard to passionately push forward from."
Senior defender Olivia Dupon scored her first goal of the year in the 12th minute, her first goal since her sophomore year in 2009, but the rest of the scoring came from familiar faces. Margret Thorolfsdottir scored her seventh goal of the year just over a minute later, and Hannah Emmett scored twice for the Urban Knights, including the game-winner in overtime.
For Magga, her assist on the first goal by Dupon and then her goal in the first half put her in sole possession of first place on the single-season points leaderboard with 15 points. Emmett tied her personal best and previous single-season record with 12 points after her two goals. Megan Bucci had two assists, setting up Magga's goal and Emmett's first goal, while Erica Wheeler-Dubin added her fourth assist of the season on the game winner.
The Urban Knights and Lady Penguins battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie back on October 15th, and also won 1-0 on some late heroics by Thorolfsdottir way back on September 10th. Friday's game was competitive and evenly matched all around, with the teams deadlocked in saves (2), corner-kicks (4), and fouls (16), and virtually so in shots (12-11 ART U). But it was the numbers on the scoreboard that mattered the most, and after 97 minutes, the Knights came out on top.
Academy of Art scored twice early, with the goal from Dupon coming off a free kick from midfield. Magga kicked it into the box, and Dupon put her header in to the far back post. Less than a minute later, Megan Bucci pulled her signature run up the left sideline and, just like she has four previous times this season, found Thorolfsdottir streaking down the middle for the open goal.
The Knights went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but Dominican was determined to get a win against their Bay Area rival, scoring twice within five minutes and making it a brand new ballgame. Sara Pimentel scored the first goal for the Penguins as she came out of the pack on a 2-on-1 situation with goalkeeper Jessica Bibby, putting it in the back of the net.
Tori Selesia scored the second goal in the 59th minute off a deflected free kick from Julianna Bratsberg. Emmett's goal in the 64th minute put the Knights up once again, but Katie Brown equalized on a floater of a free kick that bounced right over the keeper into the net. The game went to overtime for the second match in a row, and seven minutes into it, the Knights were given a corner kick. Wheeler-Dubin, the designated specialist for the Knights, lined it up and gave a perfect entry pass to Emmett, who headed it into the net for the game-winner.
"Having Bibby back in net was a big contributor to the confidence our back line and overall team shape had in the first half," Nasypany said. "But in the end, her presence and communication helped raise the team's spirits down the stretch and ultimately for the much deserved W."
