Knights Take Two From Otters

Box Score Game 1
Box Score Game 2

San Francisco, CA –
Academy of Art University's softball team hosted CSU Monterey Bay in a double header on Wednesday afternoon. The Urban Knights came out attacking and were in control of both games. ART U was in the lead for most of the day, and with powerful pitching backed by clutch hits, the Knights came away with two victories. The women took the first game from the Otters with a score of 3-2, and won the second game with a score of 2-1.

In game one, the Otters got on the board first when they scored in the top of the second inning off a towering home run. But the Urban Knights quickly buckled down, determined to come back. They did so by answering with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. With two outs, senior Alana Aweau drew a walk. Sophomore Alyssa Hickey then stepped up and doubled, scoring Aweau from first. Sophomore Andrea Hanchey followed with a single to center field, and Hickey was able to score from second. This two out rally gave the Knights the lead which they held onto for most of the game.

Junior Sierrah Garcia backed up her team's offense by shutting down Monterey Bay's offense for most of the game. She didn't allow another run until the Otters blasted another solo home run in the top of the sixth. The home run tied the game 2-2, but again the Urban Knights didn't let up.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Genna Allen led things off with a walk for ART U. She then stole second to get herself into scoring position. Sophomore Jayme Stewart came up clutch for her team and ripped a double to the center field fence that easily scored Allen from second. That run put the Knights back on top and promptly ended the game with a final score of 3-2.

Stewart had a great game for ART going 2-4 with a double, and one run batted in. Also doing well was freshman Elyse Cordova who went 2-2 with a triple, and a stolen base, and Hickey went 1-3 with a double, one run scored, and one run batted in.

Garcia was solid for the Knights in the circle. She went all seven innings pitched giving up two earned runs, one walk, and posted seven strikeouts. Garcia received the win for the game which brings her record to 5-1.

For the Otters', Shae Olds had a good game going 2-3 with two home runs, two runs, and two runs batted in. Angelina Orozco also stood out going 2-4 with a double. On the mound was Kylie Linnane who went six innings pitched, giving up three earned runs and posted six strikeouts. She records the loss in the game.

The Knights scored three runs on six hits and committed no errors.

In game two, the Knights took control from the beginning and never looked back. They pushed a run across in the bottom of the first to get things started. Sophomore Julie Martin led the inning off with a walk. Then with one out, junior Genna Allen sacrifice bunted to move Martin to second. Two batters later, senior Alana Aweau singled on a bunt which scored Martin from second. The one run lead was enough to keep the Knights on top for a while.

Freshman pitcher Katie Brooks was solid on the mound doing her job to shutout the Otters' offense. But in the top of the fourth, Monterey Bay was able to push one run across to tie things up. The Knights wasted little time, and came back when they scored in the bottom of the inning. With one out freshman Lauren Clark-Lewis drew a walk, and advanced to second on a groundout by freshman Elyse Cordova.  Martin then came up to bat and singled to center field, scoring Clark-Lewis from second. That one run gave the Knights the lead for the second time in the game, and would be enough to keep ART U ahead, as they ended up taking the game with a final score of 2-1.

On the mound for the Knights, brooks did a terrific job keeping her opponents off balance. Brooks went all seven innings pitched giving up just three hits, one earned run, and recorded three strikeouts. She also received the win in the game.

Offensively, Martin led the way for ART U going 1-2 with one run scored, and one run batted in. Clark-Lewis also did well going 1-2, and scored the game winning run, and Jayme Stewart stood out going 1-2 with a double.

For Monterey Bay, Jamie Moon led things going 1-2 with two stolen bases, and one run scored. Danielle Onkin went 1-1 in the game, and Shannon Bailey rounded things out going 1-3. Jessica Moon received the loss in the game after going six innings pitched giving up five hits, two earned runs, and posting four strikeouts.

The Urban Knights scored two runs on five hits, and committed one error in the game.

After the sweep, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 7-3 overall, and CSU Monterey Bay's record falls to 3-12 overall. The Urban Knights' originally scheduled games for this Sunday against Humboldt State have been canceled due to rain in the forecast. The Knights will play next on Wednesday, March 2nd when they host Sonoma State in a double header.
