Game #4
ART U (1-2) vs. California Baptist University (4-1)
September 17th at 12:30 pm
Riverside, CA -- California Baptist Soccer Field
HITTING THE ROAD: ART U heads to Riverside to take on the Lancers of Cal Baptist (4-1) after winning a thrilling 1-0 match against Dominican (CA) last week at Treasure Island. Sophomore Margaret Thorolfsdottir scored a goal in the 88th minute off a free kick from Jasmine Sharp, and the Urban Knights notched their first win of the year. First-year keeper Jessica Bibby had nine saves, including a crucial punch save as time expired.
FINDERS KEEPERS: Head Coach Aileen Nasypany lauded first-year goalkeeper Jessica Bibby's effort, especially under constant pressure, in the win over Dominican. Bibby, who graduated from Berkeley High in 2009, is listed as a freshman on the roster, but is actually a third-year student, having redshirted her freshman year at UC Riverside before transferring back home to the Bay Area in 2010. Due to NCAA eligibility restrictions, Bibby was not able to play last year, but is now entering her first year between the posts for the Urban Knights.
STELLAR STOPPER: Against Dominican, freshman Sophie Meneses impressed everyone by shutting down the leader of the Lady Penguins, Julianna Bratsberg. Bratsberg, the junior midfielder from Santa Rosa, had played instrumental roles in the Dominican's wins over Sonoma State and Western Washington, in which she scored two goals and added two assists. The Penguins fed their star the ball all game long, but Meneses and the other defenders shut her down, and her two shots were both saved by Bibby in the goal.
LANCERS ON A ROLL: The Lancers of Cal Baptist have won three in a row and are coming off their first conference win against Dixie State last week before welcoming the Urban Knights on Saturday. Their high-powered offense, led by PacWest Player of the Week Fabiola Zanella da Silva (G, 2 assists last week), has outscored all opponents 14-2 so far in 2011, with their only loss coming by way of a 1-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kimberly Allard has four goals for the Lancers, and Kylee Nicassio has also added three goals for Cal Baptist.
WELCOME ABOARD: Cal Baptist is entering their first year in the PacWest Conference after 41 in the NAIA Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC). The Lancers have already made a fast impression on the PacWest, garnering multiple PacWest Athlete of the Week accolades in the opening weeks of the fall season. Junior Mitchell Moore took home the honor for men's cross country on Sept. 11, Zanella da Silva did the same for women's soccer this week after Kimberly Allard took it the week before, and Ingrid Carmona earned the first Play of the Week honor for CBU for volleyball on Sept. 7. Da Silva and Allard were also named to the preseason All-PacWest team.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Knights will welcome Hawaii Pacific (2-1) to Boxer Field next week for the Sea Warriors' third California game in six days. ART U will act as the final stop on HPU's tour of the mainland after visits to Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican. The Sea Warriors defeated the Knights 4-0 in their last meeting in 2010.
