OPENING SERVE
The Urban Knights dropped a five-set match to UH Hilo last week despite a 20-kill performance from middle blocker
Lindsay Elgin. The Knights had another roller coaster match, winning the first set, but losing the next two before forcing a fifth set against the Vulcans. Freshman
Taylor Suchy also had another strong performance, totaling 11 kills and 13 digs, and fellow freshman
Rachael Smith flirted with ART U history but ended up short of the single-match assists record, finishing with 51 overall.
ON THE COLOR WHEEL
Wednesday night, the Knights are looking to BLACK OUT Kezar Pavilion, so make sure to wear black to the game against Chaminade. Saturday the Knights will be showing their support for Breast Cancer Awareness, playing their annual Think Pink game, and they encourage all fans to wear pink to support the American Cancer Association. FAN BUS CENTRAL.
SWORDS SPRING INTO ACTION
Chaminade freshman Kim Spring is leading the Silverswords in kills so far in 2012, totaling 158 kills in 49 sets and having the most of three Swords with over 100 kills. Crystal Powell (130) and Whitney Viveiros (127) also have over 100, but Spring, a 5'9 outside hitter from Bern, Switzerland, was a member of the Junior Indoor National Team for four years and a member of the Switzerland Beach Junior National Team back in 2008, winning three championships overall. The Knights have run five in a row against Chaminade, and are 5-2 all-time.
IT'S A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT
The Urban Knights volleyball team has played 14 matches so far this season, and last Thursday's match marked the sixth time going the distance to five sets. Their one five-set win came against CCAA opponent Humboldt State back at the Route 92 showdown. Coach
Ed Jackson says that the positives that he takes from the five-set matches are that the Knights don't stop fighting until the end, and that the expanded number of sets only leads to more experience for his young team.
LADY PENGUINS DOUBLE THREAT
Dominican volleyball has felt a resurgence early on in the PacWest schedule, but has come down to earth a little bit in the past two weeks. After starting the conference season with three straight wins, including one over the Knights, they have since lost two in a row. The Lady Penguins are led by the power combo of Hannah Stocking and Jessica Jones, who have combined for 239 kills on the year, more than half of the Dominican overall total. Stocking had 16 kills against the Urban Knights the first time around, and Jones added 10 kills.
SETTING IT UP
After two more games at home, the Urban Knights will hit the road to take on Fresno Pacific before coming back to Northern California to face Holy Names in their second matchup and then Dominican for their third and final matchup of the year.
