Game #6
ART U Urban Knights (2-2-0) vs. Point Loma Sea Lions (2-1-0)
Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:30 PM
San Francisco, CA -- City College of San Francisco
ON THE APPROACH
The Urban Knights have won two in a row, notching a 2-0 week last week with wins against Mills College and Simon Fraser. ART U pulled even on the year, with identical 1-1 records both home and away.
BARK-ING UP THE RIGHT TREE
Junior transfer
Beth Barker has made quite an impression so far for the Knights, and after her game-winner against Simon Fraser, is now leading the Urban Knights in scoring with three goals and six points. She has shot three times on goal and each one has gone in, giving her a 1.000 shooting percentage on the year. Barker's scoring doesn't come without warning, as she led College of the Canyons in scoring in her freshman campaign before transferring to ART U.
LEAVING COUGAR TOWN
Azusa Pacific draws the Knights in their first ever PacWest matchup and travels into hostile territory in San Francisco. The Cougars have not fared well so far, as their only win on the year has come at home, coupled with three losses on the road. Last week they were shut out twice, once by Seattle Pacific and on Saturday against Western Washington. Azusa Pacific is returning 11 seniors and 91 percent of last year's scoring from their run to the NAIA semifinals. This is the first ever matchup between these two teams.
MCCANDLISH GIVES BACK
Team captain and senior midfielder
Tanner McCandlish didn't take a break from soccer last summer, putting in time as an instructor for a series of American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) camps led by her high school coach at Santa Ynez Valley High. "The fact that I play for an NCAA Division II program gives hope to the young girls who have aspirations to play at the collegiate level," said McCandlish. "Because we come from such a sheltered community, many kids can be discouraged when it comes to breaking out of our small town mindset and have bigger dreams. Being a role model for them is a great feeling."
SEA LIONS ON POINT
The Point Loma Sea Lions are also on a two-game roll, winning a close 1-0 contest against Colorado Christian and then cruising to a 4-1 over Central Washington on Tuesday. The Knights will have to contain freshman Amanda Mitchell, who has scored three goals this year for the Sea Lions, including two against Central Washington. Brooke Winklepleck also scored her second goal of the year against the Wildcats. This is also the first matchup between the Urban Knights and PLNU.
COMING UP SOON
The Knights will continue their home-heavy stretch next week by hosting Dixie State on Thursday and Grand Canyon on Saturday.
