Oakland, CA – Academy of Art University returned to its winning ways Friday night with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) sweep of PacWest rival Holy Names inside Tobin Gymnasium. Sophomore tandem
Melissa Brum and
Emily Papale posted 21 kills and 14 kills respectively to lead the charge, delivering clutch plays down the stretch in each frame.
An evenly played first set saw the Hawks go up 8-4, but Papale's kill initiated a 5-1 response to tie it 9-9. Freshman
Margaret Winkler put one away to start another surge, this one 6-1, with junior
Isabel Emrich and Brum slamming home kills. For all the ART U runs, a feisty HNU team tied it 20-20 before Papale and Brum worked together to close the set in favor of the Knights 25-23.
Multiple runs by the Hawks eventually put them up 13-8, but Academy of Art roared back with a 7-1 push ignited by three straight kills from Brum. Holy Names threatened once again by going ahead 21-19, however, a timeout realigned the ART U attack and six unanswered points finished by Brum's kill led the Knights to a 25-21 victory.
The momentum of Academy of Art's end to the second set carried into the third as ART U leapt ahead 9-3. Junior
Rachael Smith delivered two service aces and Brum added another to strengthen the lead though HNU fought back to tie it 15-15. Scoring six of the next seven points, the Knights got up 21-16 and never looked back. It was Brum who wrapped up the 25-21 third set win with a kill to conclude the match.
The Urban Knights improved to 9-10 overall and 4-7 in PacWest play. Brum finished with a match-high 21 kills while hitting .370 and adding seven digs. Papale contributed 14 kills and 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. Irvine amassed a match-high 20 digs and, in her first start of the year, sophomore
Kabrina Speakman posted 17 digs.
Academy of Art makes its final out-of-state roadtrip to Utah with a rematch coming against Dixie State on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
