San Francisco, CA — With a fresh new look and a reorganized way of play, the Academy of Art University women's soccer team heads out this week on its final road trip of the season looking to continue its strong play as of late.
Â
The Urban Knights (2-11-1, 2-6 PacWest), who strapped on their new uniforms for the first time last week, head to Azusa, Calif., Thursday to face Azusa Pacific (7-7-1, 5-3-1 PacWest) under the lights at 8 p.m. ART U then heads to St. George, Utah, Saturday to play Dixie State in a 12:30 p.m. MDT kickoff.
Â
The Knights have only allowed three total goals in their last three games – a drastic improvement compared to the 14 goals they gave up in four straight losses from Sept. 27 to Oct. 16. ART U hasn't given up an offensive goal in two straight games after only allowing a penalty kick goal Saturday to Chaminade and shutting out BYU-Hawaii on Thursday.
Â
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Azusa Pacific (7-7-1, 5-3-1 PacWest) saw its stretch of six straight shutouts and six-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday against Cal Baptist. The Cougars had won five straight contests, outscoring opponents 14-0 in those wins, before being shutout by the Lancers. That run followed a struggling start to the season in which APU lost six of its first eight games and was shutout four times.
Â
Mayra Almazan is tied for fourth in the PacWest with seven goals scored and fourth in points with 18. Only two other players have scored as many as three goals for APU. Almazan has taken over a quarter of Azusa Pacific's 209 shots this season with 58. The Cougars have outscored opponents 11-5 in the first half alone and outshot them 109-41 in the first 45.
Â
ABOUT THE RED STORM
Dixie State (7-7-1, 5-4 PacWest) lost back-to-back 2-0 games last week at Azusa Pacific and Point Loma. That snapped its three-game winning streak with three consecutive shutouts, outscoring its opponents 10-0 during the run.
Â
Jennifer Mason is the PacWest's leading scorer with 10 goals and 24 points. Erica Gonzalez is the only other Red Storm player that has scored more than two goals this season (4). Stacie Gubler and Danica Nusink have made a majority of the starts for DSU this season, with both allowing eight goals each. Gubler leads the way with a 1.12 GAA and 28 saves.
