KNIGHT WATCHAs a team, Academy of Art ranks third in the PacWest in service aces (1.54 SA/set) and fourth in digs (16.42 DG/set). The Knights still wield one of the top hitters in the country as sophomore
Melissa Brum ranks sixth in NCAA Division II in kills per set (4.57) and seventh in points (4.95) – two categories she can be found as #2 in the PacWest. She added her 15th double-double of the year most recently against NDNU and, with 352 kills to date in 2014, she has the fourth most in the program's single-season history, closing in on a top three owned by Dan Yang (518, 399, 396).
At 34th in the country in assists per set (10.71), junior
Rachael Smith is up to third in the PacWest, looking to surpass her freshman year mark of 915 assists with 825 thus far in 2014. Her single-season career-best is 1,137 which is second on the program's all-time list.
Senior
Kanoe Irvine, who is now fourth in the PacWest in service aces per set (0.44), is four service aces away from setting the program's single season record. She and sophomore
Emily Papale are still in the PacWest's Top 10 in digs per set as they average 4.16 and 3.55 respectively. Senior
Brittany Ulmer comes off her best hitting percentage of the season (.643) after delivering nine kills with no errors against NDNU.
SILVERSWORDS HUNTING FOR GOLDAfter starting the season with five consecutive wins, Chaminade opened PacWest play by going 0-3 on the islands. Playing many of the conference's top teams during a seven-game homestand that began Oct. 13 with Dixie State, the Silverswords host ART U to complete the stretch before returning to the mainland in Southern California. They are 2-4 thus far in their longest set of games at home and are just below Academy of Art in the conference standings at 5-9. Offensively, Chaminade is led by Cassie Rushlow at 3.27 kills per set while Waihilo Chartrand is the team's top defender in terms of digs (3.02 digs per set). The Urban Knights are 7-3 all-time against the Silverswords.
SHARK-INFESTED WATERSSince defeating Academy of Art 3-1 in San Francisco on Oct. 2, Hawaii Pacific has gone 7-2 with losses only coming to Fresno Pacific (3-1) and Dixie State (3-1) along the way. Like Chaminade, HPU is currently approaching the end of a lengthy homestand in which they have won four consecutive matches including a 3-1 triumph over Point Loma and 3-2 victory against Azusa Pacific. The Sharks host Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 30 prior to ART U. In the previous matchup, HPU was led by Elizabeth Culpepper (13 kills), Kasey Thompson (12 kills), and Pomai Recca (11 kills). Recca holds the team lead with 3.55 kills per set and a .206 hitting percentage. Historically, the Sharks are now 7-3 versus Academy of Art.
SEASIDERS STUNNEDRemaining atop the PacWest standings with a 12-1 conference record, the #5 BYU-Hawaii Seasiders had the first blemish added to what was a perfect 12-0 record most recently on Oct. 25 hosting Fresno Pacific. The Seasiders had topped ART U 3-1 back on Oct. 6 and had not lost a set since through five matches before the Sunbirds dealt BYUH a 3-2 defeat. BYU-Hawaii's leader, Shih-ting Chen, who ranks second in NCAA Division II in points per set (5.65) and third in kills per set (5.00), was held to a .180 hitting percentage and 15 kills in the loss. The Seasiders are set to face NDNU on Oct. 31 before ART U comes to town on Nov. 1. The Knights have not yet defeated BYUH in 10 historical meetings.
VOLLEYBALL STRONG IN SECOND SWEEP OF NDNUFacing Notre Dame de Namur for the second time in 2014, Academy of Art University came away with a
3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-19, 25-14) for its 10th victory of the year on Oct. 25. Steadily improving their game as the sets progressed, ART U was guided by a balanced attack (four Knights combined for 43 kills) and eight team blocks in the win.
LOOKING AHEADWhen the Knights return home from Hawaii, they will first have their 'Senior Knight' honoring
Brittany Ulmer and
Kanoe Irvine on Nov. 6 with Holy Names in town.
FAN BUS signups are available! Then ART U will be away for its final three games which include stops at Fresno Pacific (Nov. 8), Dominican (Nov. 13), and NDNU (Nov. 15).
